SEAL, American Girl Die in First Trump-Era U.S. Military Raid

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/seal-american-girl-die-first-trump-era-u-s-military-n714346

In what an official said was the first military raid carried out under President Donald Trump, two Americans were killed in Yemen on Sunday — one a member of SEAL Team 6 and the other the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, the New Mexico-born al Qaeda leader who himself was killed in a U.S. strike five years ago.

The raid in southern Yemen, conducted by the supersecret Joint Special Operations Command, was intended to capture valuable intelligence, specifically computer equipment, according to a senior U.S. military official. Three al Qaeda leaders were killed, according to U.S. officials.

Contrary to earlier reporting, the senior military official said, the raid was Trump's first clandestine strike — not a holdover mission approved by President Barack Obama. The mission involved "boots on the ground" at an al Qaeda camp near al Bayda in south central Yemen, the official said.

"Almost everything went wrong," the official said.

(snip)

Defense Secretary James Mattis had to leave one of Washington's biggest annual social events, the Alfalfa Club Dinner, to deal with the repercussions, according to the official. He did not return.

I assume that this was just a very bad operation. Not to mention, because he is dead -- it is not like the statement. But, that statement will - I assume - have a long and unhappy life.

There is a world of difference between collateral death during a drone strike and a Navy Seal shooting a little girl in the neck on the direct instructions of a man who promised to kill terrorists' children.

What I also know is that Greenwald is a Putin puppet who brought this up for the express purpose of supporting Trump.

For, actually, the reasons this thread illustrates. We could've droned that building and then 1) no seal team members would be dead and 2) the death of an 8 year old would've been shrugged off as a secondary casualty rather than the focus.

in the works for weeks, if not months. Obama was iffy on it, apparently and left the plans in place.

Hard to tell what might have changed in the plans due to the New "Pres" but if the op was botched somehow, who knows. Likely Trump and Bannon thought they had some easy favorable pub from this. Probably watched too many episodes of NCIS or something.

This is why the Osama bin Laden Op was such a big deal. When you put a team in there, shit can go south fast. Generally the SEAL team will be outnumbered, but make up for it with training, tactics, and equipment. But when the bullets start flying a lot of unpredictability enters the equation.

administration which turns out not to be true. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that those reports were leaked by the Trump administration after the mission went very, very wrong. I think the new Trump admin was trying to do everything in that first week to make themselves look good and just wanted to score a quick knockout punch. And as the article stated, "everything went wrong". You know Trump, who knows more than the Generals is always boasting about his military prowess. I recall reading about how the Seal Team who went after Bin Laden practiced and I even seem to recall that they had an actual mock up of the building and grounds where they believed Bin Laden to be which they used as practice for that eventual raid.

My guess is that Trump wanted a UUUUGGGE victory to close out his first week and pushed forward on a plan that wasn't ready to be executed and as the saying goes, "everything that could go wrong, did". Thank goodness we didn't have more casualties in order to boost Fuhrer Trump's insatiable ego.

I've thus far seen no evidence that this was well-planned.

In fact, I've seen much evidence to the contrary.

A SEAL was killed! An American child was killed! A military helicopter destroyed!

Sounds like a bungled mission but will there be hearings for a the next 4yrs about it? Will we hear deplorables outrage on social media? Lock him up?? Me thinks not.

"Obama Killed a 16-Year-Old American in Yemen. Trump Just Killed His 8-Year-Old Sister."

"As noted by my colleague Jeremy Scahill – who extensively interviewed the grandparents in Yemen for his book and film on Obama’s “Dirty Wars” – the girl was “was shot in the neck and killed,” bleeding to death over the course of two hours. “Why kill children?,” the grandfather asked. “This is the new (U.S.) administration – it’s very sad, a big crime.” "
