The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted to advance the nomination of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education.

A Senate committee voted to advance the nomination of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education Tuesday.

The vote was split along party lines, with all 11 Democrats on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voting to reject DeVos, and all 12 of the committee’s Republicans voting to approve her. Next, DeVos faces a full Senate vote.

“I have not been persuaded that Betsy DeVos will put students first if she were confirmed and I have not been persuaded that she has the experience, skills, understanding or vision to lead this critical department at a time when it is more important than ever,” committee ranking member Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said Tuesday before the vote. “There is so much about Betsy DeVos’ record over the years that we can look to when we make this decision.”

Every time McConnell starts to intone "Request unanimous consent," there needs to be a Democrat ready to shout "No!" Subject every last administrative, legislative, housekeeping, and other item of business to a 72-hour wait and full debate on the floor. It's easy to do; just remember what the Republicans have been doing for eight years.
