And another thing about voter fraud

Instead of requiring photo id (which has been found unacceptable in a number of states and which is ineffective anyway because what if you gain 300 lbs. or suddenly go bald or something), remember those poor proud Iraqis showing off their purple fingers, indicating that they'd voted? Cheap and easy: we have voters dip a finger in an ineradicable ink at the time of voting--viola! no more double votes, no matter how many places you're registered in.

And polling officials already have the legal right to make a suspicious vote conditional--everyone who the judge of elections feels might be an illegal immigrant or otherwise not qualified to vote, even if her signature matches the signature in the voter rolls, that vote would be kept aside until that person could prove her identity. Of course the ACLU which is now rolling in dough would have lawyers in every district to help people identify themselves. Give folks four or five days to prove their identity, then either count their votes or toss them. Sure, it would prolong the suspense, but a few elections run like this might finally put an end to RW attempts to suppress the vote in this way.

1. We do not restrict a fundamental right for no reason

Repeated studies have shown that there is no voting fraud. The GOP uses lies about voting fraud to justify voter suppression laws. The OP is based on a right wing lie

5. Oh *I* know all that

my point was that since presenting them with facts makes no difference, present them with a plan that "embraces" their concerns and see what they make of that. I am not seriously suggesting that

oh never mind

6. The sole and only reason for voter id law is to steal elections

You are giving into vote suppressors with this proposal. The GOP knows that there is no in person voter impersonation but claims about this type of fraud can be used to justify bogus voter id laws that help the GOP win election.

2. There is no voting fraud of the type that would be prevented by the RW proposal in OP

3. Just no.

Voting takes place over a month. How does your purple finger address that?

Giving folks time to prove their identity is a form of voter suppression. Challenge all the folks with brown skin then require them to present ID at the Board of elections = poll tax (costs money to take off from work, drive to the polling place, etc.) + even if it doesn't cost money, it makes voting more burdensome for those screened (likely pretextualy) as suspicious.

That is worse than even the current rigorous voting ID requirements - which at least imposes the ID requriement uniformly, even though it is not uniform in effect (it discriminates against older people, people of color, and people without means.
