One (more) Reason Why Trump Voters Are So Angry

Americans Are Getting More Secular

A new poll finds white evangelicals are out of step with the rest of the country.

Despite all the conservative posturing about how their movement represents “real” America and liberal political attitudes are restricted mainly to the “coastal elite,” new research from the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) suggests that, at least in political terms, most Americans are secular in their orientation. While many Americans may still hold conservative personal beliefs, when it comes to the issue of church-state separation, large majorities reject efforts by the religious right to use the power of the state to impose conservative Christian values on others.

In fact, the polling data shows that there’s really only one group of Americans that rejects a secular society: White evangelical Christians. And this study is just further evidence that a lot of the political polarization in our country is the direct result of white evangelical Christians realizing that they are no longer dominant majority, and lashing out angrily in an effort to regain the levels of dominance they used to enjoy.

I personally believe that the Evangelicals' love affair with the anti-ACA crowd and their anti-Planned Parenthood crusade is going to further alienate them from the rest of us as it becomes apparent to even the dull-whitted and inattentive that their positions are a direct threat to the lives and good health of Americans living in red states as well as blue ones.

Growing up in the south in the 80's, I was inundated with this mentality. Evangelicals have always viewed themselves as being victims of the oppressive government, the view Democrats as the mouthpiece of Satan, and they will stand by any Republican politician because they yolked themselves to the conservative movement years earlier in the fight against abortion.

As the evangelical movement grew in power and influence, they we'rent satisfied with merely being political tokens so they moved into the realm of politics as actual candidates. They view their stand against government as a type of holy calling, bastardizing scripture, because they truly believe that God is calling them to turn American into a "Christian nation" because they interpret scripture related to Israel as being Gods chosen nation to be referring to America. They have a martyr complex and view any pushback to their cause as being an attack on God. If your beliefs, even if you are Christian, fall outside of their core beliefs, then you are cast out of the club. Tolerance and understanding have been used as "bad words" for as long as I can remember in evangelical circles. There is no room for understanding or compromise, because they have "God on their side" and they must be right. They see their fight in terms of spiritual warfare so they have no problems with spouting Muslim hate because in their minds they are speaking for God. The GOP created and fostered this nightmare and now we are dealing with its consequences. The evangelical community is very seductive in the way they lure people into their world, and their level of brainwashing, intended or not, is not something to be taken lightly.

We must push back against this movement or face an American Theocracy.
