Is climate change a 'forgotten issue'?

Seems like this issue comes in pretty low on everybody's concern meter lately. Even around here I seldom see climate related topics get many replies, while anything related to the newest stupid thing Trump said gets tons of attention. Personally I consider how we handle climate change to be one of the issues that will make or break humanity as a species. We'll either get our shit together and figure out viable green alternatives, or end up with an overheated mess of a world in 100 years where we lose all of our coastal cities to sea level rise.

The consensus gap is actually stunning to behold. In addition to general ignorance you see nonstop 'zombie theories' propagated by the right for the purpose of misleading the scientifically ignorant. Seems like everybody is more concerned with things like healthcare and petty politics than how to save the future of our world. I actually hope the deniers are correct on this issue, because if not we're pretty much screwed.

By nature, people react more strongly to issues that they can actually see with their own eyes. Just showing them a bunch of computer generated climate models won't convince them it's an issue worthy of their attention if they don't personally see the changes. This is where those dumb Republican arguments like "There can't be global warming, just look at all the snow outside" come from.

The other issue is how people tend to act in favor of their own economic self interest without regard for long term consequences. I mean hey, who wants to lose a significant amount of money now in order to save the planet 50 years down the road? People always want to know what's in it for them.
