"God's plan provides for those blessings to be extended to ancestors who died without an opportunity to obtain them during their mortal lives,"
Ceremonial baptisms occur when a member brings an ancestor's name to a temple. Mormons believe the ritual allows deceased people a way to the afterlife if they choose to accept it. The belief that families are sealed for eternity is one of the faith's core tenets.

Unless, of course, they don't accept it...you never know... them being dead and all.

(18,864 posts)They got into trouble for baptizing non Mormon dead people whose families found it completely insulting . I think they were baptizing Jews killed in Europe in the 2nd WW.

(13,133 posts)It does make sense though, people living with a belief of something that cannot be seen or proven would also have imagined ideas about they should or will act and live

(4,483 posts)that while they're occupied baptizing dead people, who don't care, they can't be out in the world supporting Donald Trump. It's like a bratty kid crayoning a wall--a desperate mother is grateful it isn't worse, and it does keep the little bastard busy and quiet.

(18,864 posts)You can't get into Mormon heaven unless you have been baptised into the Mormon church. They think they are doing people a big favor .
Gentiles (non Mormons) are all stuck in the lowest heaven which is like this earth. Baptised people go to the next highest heaven. Married people sealed in the Temple go to the highest heaven.

(14,854 posts)the baptized dead get to decide for themselves in the afterlife if they want to be Mormons. They're not being forced into it. If that is true, I fail to see why anyone would be bothered by it.
As someone already pointed out, the people who are doing this could instead be doing stuff that harms living people in the real world.

(50,528 posts)If it makes Mormons feel better to baptize dead people, so be it. Since accepting Mormon salvation is optional for the dead people it happens to, it's not a huge problem - kinda like a baseball player getting to choose what cap is on his plaque in the Hall of Fame.
"Hello Pope Francis, twenty-five thousand different Mormons baptized you into their faith as soon as you died. Would you like to come in as a Catholic or a Mormon?"
"Catholic is fine. But I do appreciate them thinking of me."
Here's the problem for the rest of the Christian creeds: According to every other church out there, Heaven is reserved ONLY for those who joined the club before they died. Kill 500 people then accept Jesus while you're waiting for your turn in front of the firing squad? Welcome to heaven! Set up a huge worldwide charity that helps 20 percent of the people on this planet, donate your entire worldly fortune to other charities while you're still alive, and eradicate hunger in sub-Saharan Africa, but refuse to accept any imaginary friends? No, sorry, here's your ticket for the Hell Express. (Although if you read The Inferno, you learn that other guy gets to go to the first circle of Hell with the other virtuous pagans...which is nice enough but it just isn't Heaven.)

(18,864 posts)The bottom one is the worst and it is like earth. That is where all the Gentiles go.
The next one up is for run of the mill Mormons. It is better than earth.
The top tier is for the Uber Mormons and it is the best if all.
There is no fiery hell.

(50,528 posts)How transcendence falls apart:
Most religions have a hell to scare people into church. Everyone who isn't a member of that religion gets to go to it. (Read your Chick tracts: if you don't get to go to Christian Heaven, you get snagged and tossed in Christian Hell before you get a chance to make it to Non Christian Heaven.) But everyone on the planet, regardless of their religious leanings, is a nonmember of a lot of religions. Which also means you're destined to get sent to at least thirty different hells. IF such is the case, then (1) how does anyone get into heaven and (2) if we're all going straight to someone's hell anyway, why join a religion?

(14,080 posts)This is why the Catholic hierarchy will not open the Church's records to Ancestry.com and other genealogical websites. They don't want the Mormons getting access to baptize dead Catholics. This is slowly changing...I see that old Hungarian baptismal records are now available.

(16,672 posts)My dad and uncles were NOT happy.
My grandparents died in the 40s and only knew one of their grandchildren and my cousin was not him. I find it so odd someone would make a choice like that for another. Guess it doesn't matter since it doesn't really change anything.
My dad said my grandma would smack him on his head when he met them on the other side LOL
