Haven't seen that in years. Franken is mocking Jagger's outfit and use to lifts - which was new then- in what was the first Stones farewell tour ('81?). My brother actually got a signed note from our Mother that she was to be excused from school because he was buying Rolling Stones tickets. Massive grassroots thing started by a local radio station to get the Stones to play at the Hampton Coliseum. My brother gave my daughter his shirt from that show.

Tom Davis story related to the Stones from "Thirty-Nine Years of Short-Term Memory Loss". Dan Ackroyd is MC'ing the main stage at the Sturgis rally and he takes TOM along for fun and to write jokes. Early-mid 80's. There's a "special guest" as the headliner. At the time for an event like this everyone expected it to be the Stones. Special guests of the CEO of Harley-Davidson. Ackroyd sneaks a peak at the envelope he's given to introduce the main event as he is walking on stage. He tells Tom "get in the limo and have the driver ready to go". Aykroyd walks on stage and announces "Ladies and Gentlemen, our special guest ....Elton John". Donnie was in the limo with wheels moving in about 20 seconds.

Thirty-Nine Years of Short-Term Memory Loss is Davis's autobiography. Highly recommend it.

Davis and Aykroyd always went on exotic Christmas trips ending up at Dead shows on New Years Eve. The story about them in Times Square is pure Aykroyd and hilarious.

First time I've seen this. Thanks much for the link.

I get nothing from the usual "live each day as if it's your last" paeudo-inspirational schmalz. These comments from Al Franken, and Tom Davis's wry essay, are right up my alley. Who says you can't simultaneously have empathy and irreverent humor -- even about your own demise?

I'd missed this the first time around.

Btw - used to work with Kitty Felde, whose blog this is. She's absolutely terrific! A SUPERB writer/producer/reporter/communicator. A genius. And a genuinely nice person, too. There was one Golden Mikes night during which she was called up to the stage three times to collect awards. Swept all her categories. No surprise at all.

The thing about Al is that he's smart. That's why he was so funny. He'd be good at whatever he set his mind to, and we're fortunate that he chose politics.
