I live in Mississippi. I'd kill to have any of the 3 Dems voting yes as representatives

I haven't had a chance to go to a town hall or a debate but once in my adult life. And that was when blue dog Democrat Gene Taylor was still my Congressman before he was swept away in 2010.

Now, I have Steven Palazzo, who has done a single town hall since he won that seat because he doesn't know how to interact and simply does what the guys in DC tell him. I've never known a Democratic Senator; I have Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, who also never do town halls or debates because they feel pretty secure in the knowledge that MS voters will just reelect them, always marking Republican.

I wish I was one of those red state voters blessed with a blue dog Congressman or Senator who at least listened to what I had to say even if he or she did piss me off every now and then. I'd understand why they couldn't always vote the way I wanted them to.

It takes a certain amount of privilege, I'd think, to want to primary Dems in very red states for not toeing the line – especially when they are merely symbolically not toeing the line, because by filibuster or by nuclear option, the 3 wouldn't make a difference anyway.

It's important to remember that the 3 Democrats supporting Gorsuch are from very, very red states that Trump won by huge margins -- and they are all up for election in 2018.

In the states these 3 are from, "Trump won Indiana by 19 points, West Virginia by more than 40 points and North Dakota by 35 points."

In other words, replacing them with a more left wing candidate in a primary is a guarantee that Republicans will pick up the seat.

We can't afford to lose those seats. Allowing a few red states Dems who are seriously endangered to vote for Gorsuch won't get him to 60 votes, but it might save the Senate for us in 2018 (or, in a worse scenario, prevent the GOP from winning a Senate Super Majority).

So stop the "PRIMARY THE TRAITORS!" rhetoric. That's what kept the GOP from winning the Senate majority in 2010 when they decided to primary every blue state Republican who didn't toe the Tea Party line.

But we aren't the Tea Party. So don't act like it. We have very few red state Dems, and they deserve a little leniency. Folks act as if these 3 Democrats are doing this singularly out of a craven lust for political power – a lust for which they are willing to abandon their values and beliefs. But if that were the case, they'd just switch parties and run as Republicans. It'd be much easier, friendlier, and more lucrative in those very red states.

I let her know in an email 2 weeks ago that I was looking forward to voting for whichever Dem primaried her in the next election if she voted for Gorsuch so I guess she decided to grow a spine! Whatever her reason, I'm glad she's voting NO on Gorsuch!

we Dems fought like hell to send Zell Miller to the senate.

And, then, watched him betray our Democratic wishes over and over and over.

Trust me, when you put out all that effort to put a DEMOCRATIC representative in office and every vote s/he casts betrays you, it is FAR WORSE than seeing a Republican you know will vote against your interests.

The betrayal, over and over and over, is demeaning and heartbreaking.

-----------------
ETA: And, if you don't believe me, this statement on Zell Miller's wikipedia pages says it all - "this is the last Senate election in Georgia won by a Democrat."

Democrats in Georgia were simply demoralized by Zell Miller's actions. There is simply no reason to work this hard to elect a Democrat to office when they vote Republican once you do.

worse, not just as a betrayal, but as a drain on our limited resources, that may as well have been spent on the side that is fighting against our interests.

10. There are no Democratic elected officials who vote like Republicans

It is really tiring reading the poorly informed posts. Machin votes with Democrats 75% of the time. Susan Collins votes with us about 25% of the time. It is utterly ignorant of the facts to claim he is acting like a Republican. Please actually bother to look up basic information like voting records. Facts matter.

6. Zell Miller is probably the worst example you could've come up with.

The man went to the RNC and endorsed Bush in stage.

None of the 3 Dems we're talking about would've ever gone on stage and endorsed Trump. And they'll be votes for a Dem Senate Majority Leader.

Zell Miller they ain't.

He wasn't someone who was elected TWICE as a Democratic Governor?

He wasn't someone who ran as a DEMOCRAT?

He wasn't someone we Georgia Democrats busted ass to get elected to the Senate for a 6 year term?

Yes, he was ALL THOSE THINGS and did exactly what you say..........endorsed George W. Bush for President on stage.

He was a DEMOCRAT who betrayed every single DEMOCRATIC voter who cast a vote for him.

He paid no price for that betrayal.

And, if you don't think Manchin won't do the same thing if he thinks it's prudent, you're DREAMING.

Yeah, let's talk Joe Lieberman, too.

It appears, around here on DU, party loyalty only applies to Democratic voters.

11. Democrats in Georgia DID support Max Cleland

2002 was the first year statewide electronic voting was used ANYWHERE.

Max Cleland was robbed. Plain and simple.

And don't you EVER put Max Cleland in the same sentence with Zell Miller again.

The man was a tried and true DEMOCRAT.

He served his country and his constituents with HONOR.

I watched the man serve when he got an unregistered widow money to live on when her husband died next door. A woman with 3 kids whose husband served his country and died from cancer 3 weeks after arriving in Georgia.

Max Cleland didn't ask her who she voted for. He didn't ask her if she was a registered voter and he didn't care. Instead, Max Cleland had a uniformed officer at her door to escort her to the nearest army base to pick up a check to feed her kids and move them back to Washington state with her family.

Max Cleland was much loved and respected. He was no zig zag zell.
