Does Syria have oil? Feeling Deja-Vu'ish here
During Papa Bush's years in office, there were discussions about how it seemed his administration gave Saddam Hussein a nod-and-a-wink when it came to doing whatever he wanted to do, but then Saddam invaded Kuwait, and suddenly Pappy was, "No way, Jose!" We attacked Iraq, freed Kuwait, and boxed Hussein in with no fly zones, and I assume we got rewarded one way or another with oil/oil contracts of various kinds, etc. And this is just one narrative of what happened. Could be Bush was acting properly, and there only appeared to be that go-ahead from him to Saddam, or maybe anything we got out of it oil-wise was extra. Maybe they were trying to get rid of a puppet that the US felt had gotten out of control, etc. So they deliberately mis-lead him into thinking he could invade Kuwait - after all, I think just prior to Kuwait, we provided him with satellite images of where the Kurds were so he could go bomb/gas them.
Flash-forward to today. Tillerson basically says that Assad needs to be Assad, who takes that as a hint that he can gas more people, which then brings condemnation from the Trump administration, who's talking about teaming up with Russia to take him out. Was this an honest misstep from the Trump admin, or was it deliberate, and is there some oil in Syria... or is the possibility of doing joint air attacks with Russia a kind of payback from Trump to Putin? Or is it just Trump trying to find his war to make him look more presidential, get the American people on his side "again," and boost his sagging poll numbers and ego?
