Many people held their noses while voting for Trump. And the overall voter-participation was low.

And Trump is doing his best to make clear that his whole campaign was built on lies:
- Those who voted for him because he would bring back coal-jobs, why would they reelect him?
- Those who voted for him because of the wall, why would they reelect him?
- Those who voted for him because they felt ignored by the left and right political establishment, what has Trump done to bring them jobs, to bring them doctors, to bring them better infrastructure?

If Trump wants to be reelected, he needs victories. Victories that are his alone and that he need not share with the republican establishment. He ran as an outsider. Now he's part of the swamp.
