Apparently the news has gotten out that there are so many factions among the rebels and so many opportunists who have flocked there because they like to fight wars (DAESH and Al Quaeda, for instance) that you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys, if any.

We do know Assad is a thug of the first order. We also know it's irresponsible to tweak Putin's nose too hard. And we've all seen the videos of kids gasping for air after attacks for 6 years. What we never know is exactly who lobbed the gas bombs, too many players to figure it out.
