It reminds me of Colorado 30 years ago when I moved here. At that time Colorado was much more conservative and it's been good to watch it evolve. We've moved forward, and NM is too, just a little slower, but they kept their Democratic Senator Udall while we lost ours, so NM Democrats no so easily swayed.

I'm merely a tourist in NM but I love it. My husband, born in Texas, grew up mainly in Southern NM and Texas, but don't call him a Texan. He's proud that he "from" New Mexico.

Lived there many years ago, in Belen, just south of Albuquerque on the Rio Grande River when I was eight and nine. Belen is in a broad valley with The Sandia Mountains to the East and the "mesas" to the West, semi-desert and beautiful country.

We would ride the doodlebug up to the "city," which was little bigger than a village then, but the trip was a big adventure.

The Santa Fa railroad mainline came through Belen and freight trains picked up "helper engines" there for the climb up out of the Rio Grande valley. The motive power coming in was usually diesel, but the helpers were steam engines; huge things called Berkshires with a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement. Sometimes as many as eight would be added to a long freight train, front middle and rear of the train, and they did not have multiple unit controls like diesels do, so getting the trains rolling was quite a process. The only way engineers could talk to each other was with the engine whistles, so there would be much whistling to start with and as the train started to move. They would all start to go and then one would slip his drivers. About the time he hit the sand and got himself together someone else would lose traction. Etc.

It was always fun to go down and watch a long freight get going. From 0 to 3mph could take forever. Once they got rolling the engineers could all judge drawbar pull and would be in unison pretty quickly. Then the train would pick up speed pretty quick, and the sound of all those big steam engines working in unison was awesome.

If you've ever watched The Polar Express, the locomotive on the titular train was a Berkshire. Ironic as it was actually a freight engine - more and smaller-diameter drivers for more tractive effort and torque, but less speed.

What time period were you trainwatching, that was still using Berks as helper hogs? That would have been insanely cool to see.

womanofthehills mention of Mountainair rang a bell. That's where the helpers were taken off to run back down to Belen.

Those were the days when a slick talking kid could persuade an engineer to let him ride the helper engine up and back, which was an experience hard to describe. Working up the grade, with those steam engines down on their knees and barking their guts out was awesome.

Sometimes the helpers would be cut into a down-bound train so that they could help slow a train with their compression, but sometimes they came back down light. Coming back down the grade light; no train, just five to eight Berks coupled and running compression was terrifying.

which includes dorm rooms of the Harvey girls and the history of the RR in NM. You can sit on the Harvey House porch and watch the trains go by and then go across the street to Pete's Restaurant for some great New Mexican food. Many of the freight trains are now covered with great graffiti and many have way over 100 cars.

My house is about 3 miles from the tracks out in the country and I can hear the trains really good which I like. There are a few crossings so the trains continually blow their whistles - variations of short and long and very individual. I love the sound, some of my neighbors do not. I found an old DU post on train whistles.]

We are a blue state with a horrible governor and a poor state because a huge portion of our state budget comes from oil and gas. However, there are currently 38 Democrats / 32 Republicans in the state House of Representatives and 26 Democrats / 16 Republicans in the state Senate. 49. like a lot of states NM repubs use the university to support RW radio
Sat Apr 8, 2017, 01:10 PM
Apr 2017

NM dems could kick GOP ass if they complained to UNM for letting limbaugh station 770 KKOB broadcast UNM lobos games.

kkkob dominates the state with pure GOP/Koch bullshit about 15 hrs a day 5 days a week and a couple of real fascist idiots on the weekend.

so they use the LOBOS logo to sell advertising to pay for their cap. more than 88 unis around the country do the same. it's a fucking shame the prog orgs let it happen without complaint. almost any major issue can be protested at those stations. when the discussion starts, whatever the school does, the GOP will freak out, media will notice, and adverrisers will flee. stations like KKKKOB will go broke or change programming or have to be subsidized by the koch's etc.

UNM is basically helping martinez defund public ed in NM. martinez/skandera used lobos/limbaugh radio to tar and feather the pro public ed ABQ school super a couple od years ago. they spent weeks attacking him, finally got rid of him for basically nothing, and then complained about the 'golden parachute' they forced the city to pay.

kkkob is the real reason martinez won - they attacked denesh for months with bullshit, while waving the lobos banner over the station.

on nov 22 the producer pat frisch was filling in for the local morning asshole and was attacking santa fe and its mayor for being a sanctuary city and referenced the killer vigilante “Purge” movies, suggesting “some people may say hey, maybe that’s not a bad idea.”

it's absurd for progressive student groups to keep putting up with this crap - all those stations do global warming.

The 88 universities listed below broadcast sports on 257 of Rush Limbaugh’s 600 radio stations.

Those stations depend on those universities to help them attract advertisers and are legitimate places to protest any issue related to the Trump agenda.

Those universities have no excuse not to begin looking for apolitical alternatives.

Protests at state capitols and other locations are often easily ignored by media and politicians because Republican radio stations can yell over them for weeks after protestors have gone home. Talk show hosts attack and mischaracterize protestors, their tactics, and their objectives. They also encourage local officials and police to break protests up and excuse violence directed at protestors. They will repeat fabricated stories of protestor violence, looting, etc.

Except for occasional innocuous programming, all of those stations operate exclusively for the benefit of the Republican Party, paid for by advertisers. They coordinate with national and state GOP and their allied think tanks. They use public airwaves while call screeners protect them from public challenge and correction.

If Trump/GOP/Kochs/Putin paid $1000/hr for radio infomercial time, each station, at 15 hours/day x 5 days/week would be worth $75,000 every week. 257 stations would be worth $19MIL/week, or more than $1BIL/year. 1200 stations are worth about $18MIL/day or $5BIL/year.

Those stations have played an essential role in selling and excusing the Republican attack on democracy for the last 30 years and getting Donald Trump to the White House.

Any university supporting Republican talk radio is shooting itself in the foot, demeaning its mission statement and professed goals and values, and is undermining the interests of its students, faculty, employees, and surrounding communities.

Those stations are licensed to operate in the public interest but they all:

- deny global warming
- fight environmental regulation and always support fossil fuel solutions over renewables
- fight health care reform
- want to end net neutrality
- argue for media consolidation
- fight campaign finance reform
- fight to defund and privatize public education, attack teachers and work to lower their salaries, attack their unions, push voucher solutions and standardized testing, and obstruct efforts to lower student debt
- use public airwaves to sell voter suppression legislation with lies and exaggeration about voter fraud, millions of “illegal aliens” and dead people voting for Democrats, etc.
- use and excuse racism, misogyny, homophobia, and hate to divide communities and push voter suppression and other anti-democratic Republican legislation
- work to deny reproductive rights for women and access to contraception, and defund Planned Parenthood
- fight efforts to increase minimum wage, and advocate eliminating it
- undermine the economic and environmental interests of their communities
- use public airways to repeat propaganda that is demonstrably false and continue to lie after being corrected, use call screeners to exclude dissenting opinions
- coordinate with and provide free publicity for Republican politicians and think tanks when needed for elections, passing legislation, and attacking critics and opponents
- while railing against “political correctness”, they loudly demand regressive conformity

Many of those relationships began when the stations broadcast music and general non-partisan programming. Their programming became exclusively partisan in 1987 when Ronald Reagan ‘killed’ the Fairness Doctrine and Republicans began buying up radio stations to create a talk radio monopoly.

If school administrations argue they can’t make business decisions based on politics, they could be asked this:

- If the Gulf Stream stopped or slowed enough to radically lower average temperatures in Europe and North America, would they continue to support the global warming denial from those stations?

- Or, if a radio station went to KKK programming would the university still allow its mascot and school brand be used to sell a KKK agenda?

There seem to be two versions of the relationship between university, licensing company, and radio station. A licensing company pays the university for the broadcasting rights and then a station pays the licensing company for those rights. Or the licensing company pays the radio station to broadcast games. In some relationships, such as with the University of New Mexico, there is no bidding process.

The station gets to use the school logos, mascot, and community standing to attract advertisers.

There are many sports talk stations around the country that want to broadcast those sports events and would be more appropriate. They talk sports all day, not politics. They sell sports and sports merchandise.

Compared with TV, radio related revenues are minor. Can loud Republican radio stations be replaced with multiple smaller apolitical stations?

If some licensing revenue is lost can donors be found to make up the difference? If there is a loss, how does it compare with the harm it is doing to its own principles, students, and surrounding communities? Not to mention the damage from defunding public education.

Is there an opportunity for a licensing company that can find apolitical alternatives to reach similar audiences?

Since those stations sometimes weigh in directly on elections for university regents and selection of administration, including presidents and chancellors - is there a conflict of interest?

Is a university that supports Republican radio violating its 501c3 tax exempt status?

Those are questions every community around those universities should be having.

Here is the list of universities with the number of Limbaugh stations for each school and the total for each state. The list is incomplete. It does not include stations that do not headline Limbaugh. For instance, the University of Wisconsin broadcasts on 5 Limbaugh stations but also on 2 stations that headline Sean Hannity. Some universities may have made changes recently.

Sat Apr 8, 2017, 10:50 PM
Apr 2017

Over one third of New Mexico's budget is from oil and gas so Suzanna has made lots of cuts. She is relaxing the medical marijuana program some because she needs the money. Dispensary growers can now grow 1000 plants every three months instead of the 450 last year. The medical program is growing by leaps and bounds. The Democrats want to make up the budget difference by legalizing cannabis but Martinez does not - even though local dispensary growers claim her husband owns part of a dispensary. Pueblos are planning to start growing hemp and marijuana as NM pot laws don't apply to them. The state is poor because Suzanna put all her energy into oil and gas. All should change when she is out.

And cannabis will soon be changing everything as soon as Martinez is out. The native Americans have more money now. A few yrs back, a friend who lived in Isleta Pueblo said every member received $10,000 a yr from gaming profits. I recently went to physical therapy for a knee injury. My therapist, a native American, said Isleta paid for her education and her sister's education. Her sister is a doctor with no student loans.

Acoma Pueblo is particularly beautiful because it is on top of a mesa and the old pueblo has no electricity. This pueblo is mostly used as weekend homes and feast day homes - most people living in the valley below. Acoma is planning to open the largest cannabis greenhouse in the world - room for 40 million plants. There is a limit on how much pot you can grown in NM, but no limit for the pueblos.

their talents come out in our protests. Go to most towns in NM, and there are lots of art galleries. My nearby tiny town of two blocks is filled with murals, has an art center and an art gallery.

Recent SF Women's Day march.

We may well be headed for a dystopian future. But maybe electing an incompetent immature jerk will scare enough fence sitters enough to get us to another progressive era.

and I absolutely love NM. It's just the perfect fit for me. If I miss the ocean, which I do, I can drive to Santa Monica in one day.

I live near the 3 Salinas Pueblo Mission ruins (Abo, Grand Quivira, and Quari.) My best friend Dixie, who is a historian of this area, is a ranger at these missions and gives tours.

I graduated from Parsons School of Design in NY yrs ago, and my painting teacher at Parsons was offered a visiting professorship in the art dept at UNM. I never would have ever thought of coming out west. I knew nothing about NM. Anyway, my professor asked 4 of his students to come along so we could still study with him and we did. Best thing that ever happened to me as I love NM.

Lots of funky old places to soak in the local hot springs. Talk about an extremely fun artsy community. Lots of houses in the town are painted bright colors like purple and orange - bizarro creativity abounds.

We have a very good, hard working citizen legislature right now, especially the Senate.

and that there's no water. The rivers are more like creeks and the only water you can boat on is the Elephant Butte Reservoir and it's been getting lower every year, so soon it will be paddle boards or rowboats. The wisecrack about the Rio Grande is that it's too thick to sail, too thin to plow.

The air is extremely dry and you'll have nosebleeds until you get used to it.

Now we have to get rid of the Republican in the governor's mansion so some of this stuff can get signed.

I do think she signed the Narcan for Cops bill. She also signed the bill ending Civil Asset Forfeiture by state and local cops. Now only the DEA can rob you in NM.
