Why Smart People Hate Republicans

In my own corner of the world, I find myself surrounded mostly by people who are apolitical. Okay so maybe apolitical isn't the correct word. But there is a certain lack of depth when it comes to knowledge of political issues especially when it comes to national politics. People may concern themselves with what I call anecdotal politics but usually ignore the situational politics.
When you look at the 2012 Republican Presidential Primary it's hard to believe that this is the party that freed the slaves. All you have is a group of very old out of touch white guys pandering to those Americans naïve enough to think that things used to be better. I know it may sound self defeating but as much as I would like to criticize our current President I can't, knowing what the alternative is. It's not Obama's fault that we have an exclusive two party system when there are really more than two kinds of Americans.
Mitt Romney is a robot, he's a liar, he's a hypocrite, he would do the same exact things that Bush did, because the Republican Establishment has a monolithic one track mind. If you are a "true conservative" this sounds bad to you. But I have one question. Would you want to wake up in November knowing that Rick Santorum was in charge of the nukes?
I blamed racism for everything a few posts ago. But I was being facetious and oversimplifying to prove a point. Racism might be a major factor motivating Republican voters. But Republican politicians hate Obama for a different reason. They hate him because he accentuates the fact that they don't know how to do anything "new". The last time they tried to do "new" we ended up with Sarah Palin. Most of these politicians are educated people, and they do feel some sense of shame for their constant pandering to the ignorant. They've had to make intellectual a dirty word as people with any sort of class have fled their party in droves. The majority of sane conservatives just lie and say their "independent" as the term Republican has quickly come to be synonymous with the politics of hatred and seclusion.
