I got up bright and early and went to the fast food place to get breakfast and coffee. This man in front of me started raising his voice at the girl at the register because her computer was rebooting and she had to wait for it. He said " Now you've ruined my morning and I'm stuck here dealing with your stupidity!" I told him " Hey jerk you've been waiting thirty seconds and you're throwing a temper tantrum. No one wants to hear your shit this early in the morning. You're only griping at that girl because she can't say anything back to you, but I can asshole. Stop ruining my morning. Zip it and wait for for breakfast or leave!" He left LOL. Then it was my turn at the counter. She said " Your breakfast is on me this morning. Thank you so much you made my day ."

(45,427 posts)Assholes like that do tend to ruin people's day first thing in the morning. I've always wondered what it is about some people who just wake up wanting to spew bitterness at someone.
You did good. I hope that breakfast was delicious

(35,658 posts)A lot of people won't say anything and I can understand why. I'm not one of them, though. It doesn't bother me in the least to call people out on their bad behavior. After all, if it weren't for speaking out, these people would feel like they got away with something.
This person will walk away knowing that next time he tries that, there just might be that one person in line who will call him on it.

(28,120 posts)I embarrass my hubs confronting jerks.
Had a waiter not long ago who, because he was gay, was being harassed by an asshole at an adjoining table. I waited until my husband paid the check and we were out the door to pretend I had left something so that I could run back in and confronted that jerk. The huge guy stood up but I was already half way to the front door. I don't doubt that such an asshole would hit a woman too.
Don't let people be jerks. See something, say something.

(81,220 posts)I reread that story and it suddenly struck me - if she was grateful enough to buy that guy's breakfast for him, I'm wondering how many times she's been verbally abused like that? Did she just reach her fed-up point? That's quite a way to say thank-you especially when you're probably paid a pittance in a job like that.

(15,241 posts)Standing in a professional business where some older man (like me) was berating the people behind the counter because they made him waste a whole day (it was 10:30AM) since some meds weren't ready for his pet.
Not that I have the bells to speak up like you did I also felt constrained since causing a scene in an office is not something the business really wants. I did let the employees know that I sympathized with them later, however.

Unlikely for a bully to react physically in that situation, but not impoasible.
At a local McD, 2 grown men beat a customer unconcious and stole his food to boot,
They were arrested a day later, charged, and convicted.

Martial arts classes are a good start.
Along with a good understanding of the laws involved with such encounters.

(81,220 posts)Takes all kinds, I guess. Another thing I wonder - is this something that's on the increase in the public? That would route straight back to trump, too, making it okay to be utterly loutish, out loud and in-yer-face, whenever you damn well feel like it. A strike against political correctness - which itself is just another name for common courtesy. Those who, when asked, hail trump because "he tells it like it is," and then answer the next question with "yeah I know he's lying, and I don't care." I wonder how raw and on edge people's nerves are now? My husband was recently complaining that he feels so much more touchy and out-of-sorts since trump took our White House.
This is in NO way an attempt to excuse the behavior of the bully in the OP. I just wonder if we're gonna be seeing more of this. A new syndrome that psychologists will begin documenting: the trump-effect.

Jeez. Glad he spoke up with this obscene diatribe, but surely - when the poor berated worker thanked him...wouldn't it have been a bit more noble to not only pay for his own breakfast, but maybe add a tip on top?
Sorry, this story is all wrong.
Although I don't think the obscene diatribe was necessary.
A nice tip would have been a good gesture.

There are a lot of powerless jerks out there who are incapable of keeping up and who take it out on everybody they know won't talk back out of fear of losing their jobs.
Not taking it personally is a skill everybody needs to develop since some people are always going to go out of their way to be screeching, tantruming douchenozzles.
