Before You Head to Chick-Fil-A
July 2, 2012 By Hemant Mehta
you should know they gave $1,900,000 to anti-gay groups in 2010. A portion of all the food youre buying there is being used to impede civil rights for gay people. http://www.advocate.com/business/2012/07/02/chick-fil-donates-2-mil-antigay-groups
That brings them to nearly $5,000,000 in bigot funding over the past decade. http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/chick-fil-a-has-spent-5-million-trying-to-stop-gay-marriage/discrimination/2012/07/02/42684

(18,470 posts)...if they want to miss out on the money because they think their employees should have that day off, well more power to them.
What I do hold against them is their pandering to the far right, and it's why I don't eat there.
Brigid
(17,621 posts)Why fret about their being closed on Sundays? Getting all worked up about it seems like a waste of energy to me.
OnyxCollie
(9,958 posts)I wrote five words. Doesn't seem like getting all worked up about it to me.
I didn't even put the caps lock on.
On edit: I checked your profile-

Who's the one "getting all worked up about it?"
Brigid
(17,621 posts)And posting in the Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity Group is not some sort of crime. That is all I'm going to say on the matter.

(16,063 posts)Take boneless chicken breast and cut in half. Pound till there about 1/2" thick
Marinate them in Pickle juice for an hour.
Mix 2 eggs and 1/2 cup Milk for a wash
Flour:
2 cups flour
salt
pepper
basil dried
onion powder
garlic powder
paparika
about 1/2 teaspoon of each or to taste.
Dreg the breast in the egg/milk wash then flour
Fry in oil
And the important part:
Hamburger bun w/ mayo and pickle slices.
The secret is marinating them in the pickle juice.
Taste just like them.

I do like their chicken but I won't support anyone who supports bigotry.

(6,907 posts)but I know it enough to know that it doesn't have mayo on it, and it is clear to me that it is the result of frying under a pressure cooker. I don't believe this recipe is accurate fwiw.

SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)But I don't see a big deal about the closed on Sunday part. When my ex wife and I were dating, she worked at Publix Supermarkets (only in FL then, all over the South now), and they used to be closed on Sunday. Their marketing campaign was that they worked hard six days a week, but Sunday was for families.
As competitors closed in, they had to change the policy and stay open on Sunday.
Religious or not, it was nice that there was a day when all of the employees could know they wouldn't have to work.
Ian David

(52 posts)So you're mad at a company because they force their employees to take 1 day off per week. What an evil corporation. Fuck those employee friendly policies, they should be slave driving the worthless idiots into the ground for an additional 1% profit for their owners like everyone else in this great country. Chik-fil-a == terrorist socialist muslims freedom haters.

(9,958 posts)before you go off on a rant.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_law
Blue laws required businesses to be closed on Sundays. The reason provided was that it offered a day for people to spend time with their family. In reality, it was to support the Christian belief that Sunday was a day of rest. So if you were Jewish, it meant closing up your business for an additional day (Sunday) to observe a religious belief you don't care about.
It violates the First Amendment (the Establishment clause.)
Chic-fil-a still follows that tradition, and while they are free to do so, it comes across as sanctimonious to those heathens who might like to buy a chicken sandwich for lunch.
Sans__Culottes
(92 posts)I detest them because of their fundy, homophobic bullshit.
Their pretentious "closed-on-the-lord's-day" crap is merely a sad reflection of sanctimonious xian unconstitutional blue-laws.

(879 posts)Our local Chick-fil-a's Christmas party got raided because a neighbor called and reported they were serving alcohol to minors. Then there was the guy selling marijuana out the back door.
Patiod
(11,816 posts)There were a small group of regulars who swam every morning at a local public high school.
She was always proselytizing, and even gave everyone The Jesus Video at Christmas time (about 3 of us were Jewish). This is Philadelphia, and that stuff just doesn't go over well here - it's not part of the culture - we find it intrusive and rude.
Fortunately her equally fervent evangelical husband got transferred to a Chik-fil-a in Fredricksburg, VA, where that behavior is a little more mainstream.
I got the sense - and I could be wrong - that they draw their managers exclusively from the ranks of evangelical Christianity.

... I was thinking, "What a shock... a devout Christian donates big bucks to Christian organizations (that
I really know nothing about). I do know that one of the main focuses (foci?), if not the ONLY focus, of the
M&FF is preventing same-sex marriages from becoming universally "legitimized".
.
That stopped me short.
.
On being closed Sundays, though I'm a self-identified atheist, I actually really ADMIRED the guy for that,
as he seemed to be PRACTICING what he preached about family values, church attendance, maybe even
"observing the Sabbath".
.
All at what must be an ENORMOUS cost to his bottom line.
.

.
But the contributions to a group (groups) with a focus on blockading the equal rights make him a
no-brainer asswipe.

Phonetic spelling can be creative
I once knew a guy named Antoine. But his poor Momma spelled it Antweeonne. His nickname was "Wee"...and oddly enough he bowled on the same team with a guy named Gregory who was nicknamed "Gee"..
Naturally they called themselves "The WeeGee Board".

(23,272 posts)Edited to add, I always pronounced it (phonetically) as chick fee uh. That may be 12 years of french seeping through but honestly I have no idea how its pronounced. The name is actually pretty incomprehensible to me. Same as Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, or 5th/3rd Bank - what the fuck kind of names are these?!

(12,132 posts)when they started opening up all over here I refused to join and still do just because of the dumb name. I sure hope they don't do anything spectacularly good with their customer's money because I'd hate to miss out on that just from hating on their name.
But Ruth's Chris is another story - I hate that name too but they got gooooood steak. I can't go often because they are pretty spendy.

(23,664 posts)So I never felt particularly motivated to go back, a fairly easy choice since there are no locations within 100 miles of me.
Therefore, boycotting them is a no brainer for me and I'm happy to do so.
God, I love it when the moral choice is so easy to make. It would suck if there was one of their restaurants was just down the road and/or I loved their food.
