I write letters to the editor...lots of letters for Progressive DEMS.....I chose HOPE for this one. With all the posts of us blaming each other lately, please to enjoy mine. p.s. Danstage is the UW spring recital. My sister, Julliard ballerina, is the chair of Dance Dept.
In the movie of my life it was my Birthday. I walked to the gym taking my shortcut past the Homeless Shelter and encountered a guy in sandals having a smoke. 24 degrees. I said, "The birds sound happy, don't they?" He, "They sure do and it's going to be a great day." My brother. I could travel to Africa and bury myself in mud and he'd still be my brother. Courage is risking one's cliches.
At the market an Asian gentleman purchased six packages of chicken paws. I followed him to the counter and inquired, "Might I ask what you do with those?" Flashing me a smile with wings on it, he launched into a story explaining how his wife( he showed me her picture) prepared them, gave me his address and invited me over to partake.
Later I attended Danstage. In "Sounding Off" magnificent dancers tapped: "How is any one person's experience perceived by others? How do we negotiate differing points of view? When is it time to speak up?" These interactions give me back the key to my personality. Our individuality is all we have. Some barter it for security, others repress it for the "betterment of society". But blessed is the one who nurtures and rides it in with grace, love and wit from one peculiar station to the next peculiar station.
Before bed, I caught the last 20 minutes of 'The Doors". Jim Morrison died at 27. I am now old enough to be 27 year old Jim's grandmother. Yikes !!
How do you make the magic of youth stay? Tell it you are going to Junior's Deli on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn to pick up a cheesecake, and if it stays, it can have half. It will stay. Aging can be impatient and thoughtless, barging into your room when you're right in the middle of something and it doesn't bother to wipe its boots. And when the brain turns the juice off, the curtain falls, show's over, no waiting up for the reviews.
Now, I know we're better people than we manifested in 2016. May we find ourselves again and find each other May we learn to detect each other's pain before it clots into anger. May we recall from history that no country is too great and sophisticated to lose its mind. May we protect this republic from those who would set us UNfree. May we honor all, from the street to the chalkboard to the Assembly House. May we realize our goodness sets the limits of our greatness. Resist becoming errant members of a selfish, suspicious and fragmented society. Be the foundation of a new one. And, may we ALL, stay forever young.

Thank you so much for this gift. The timing is exquisite.
Yesterday I turned the same age as my Dad was when he died. I struck a deal with my memory of him: for every year I'm granted beyond this date, my Dad can have the freedom to patch into my perceptions (in some manner unknown) of the world.
The deal gives us each more life. Win-win.
