Palermo Workers, Ally Organizations Hold Week of Action Marking One Month on Strike

National and statewide community support grows for workers, boycott of Palermo products

MILWAUKEE- Community support continues to pour in for striking workers at Palermo’s Pizza from faith organizations, labor unions including the national AFL-CIO and the United Steelworkers,as well as national grassroots groups such as 9to5.

From college students to elected officials such as State Rep. State Rep. JoCasta Zamarippa and Sen. Mark Pocan, community members across Wisconsin are standing in solidarity with plant employees of Palermo's Pizza, who went on strike one month ago against the company’s poor working conditions, union-busting tactics and health and safety concerns.

Wisconsinites and people around the country are outraged by the company’s retaliatory efforts and their attempts to belittle workers’ serious health and safety concerns.

Events marking one month of strike kicking of Week of Action include:

Pipin' Hot Petition Delivery and Rally

WHEN: Monday, July 2nd 1:30 pm

WHERE: 3301 W. Canal Street

WHO: Palermo's Pizza Workers, elected officials, labor unions, faith leaders, community members and students will deliver 10,000 petitions supporting the workers to management, demanding immediate re-instatement without retaliation and that company honor the labor dispute

"Sick of Working Sick” Action and Press Conference

WHEN: Thursday, July 5th 1:30 pm

WHERE: 3301 W. Canal Street

WHO: 9to5 (national organization working for paid sick day justice), Palermo's Pizza Workers, labor unions, faith leaders, community members. Paid sick days has been a key demand of the workers, both as an employee and consumer concern.

A national boycott of Palermo products is underway and growing. Already businesses such as the Riverwest Co-op Grocery & Café owners have also committed to standing with workers in defense of the right to organize for safer conditions.

Background:

Workers at Palermo’s Pizza plant in Milwaukee state that after organizing for several months the company responded with threats, widespread firings and an immigration audit as the union drive escalated. A petition to recognize the union has been filed. The workers are seeking the re-instatement of all terminated employees and an end to management's hiring of replacement workers who are untrained and at further risk of injury and safety violations.

Palermo’s has been fined significant penalties indicative of an extremely unsafe working environment by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In the past four years, Palermo’s has been responsible for three separate incidents of worker amputation.

Palermo's Pizza employees operate heavy machinery in the course of their work, but due to insufficient training and management's demand for faster production, workers have suffered injuries on the job, leading to efforts to organize a union for safer conditions.

Palermo's markets their pizza under the company name, but also sells it to grocery stores who re-brand it and sell it under their own brand name. I have been looking for a list of groceries and alternative brand names but haven't been able to find it.
I am not sure if such a thing exists, but I thought I'd throw it out there to the group to see if anyone could help, because it's very possible that people could be buying Palermo's products without knowing it.
