Maxine Waters spends her weekends at home. For most people, this is not an unusual habit. But for Waters, it requires extra effort: Each Monday Congress has been in session over the past 26 years, she has embarked on a 2,300-mile commute from her home in Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., where she currently serves as one of the most powerful Democrats in the House of Representatives.
A pre-dawn, cross-country flight to head to work in D.C. is irritating business. Former staffers say the six-hour journey suits the 78-year-old congresswoman just about as well as youd expect. Her 5 p.m. Monday meetings are notoriously abusive. Aides who have spent the weekend gathering Capitol Hill intelligence, studying the intricacies of securities law and trying to win new political allies report to the full staff in front of a one-woman firing squad.
Its definitely a situation that can be slightly intimidating, said one former staffer, comparing the grillings to the Trump administrations televised press conferences. She interrupts, doesnt let them finish, scolds them. These are people who are just trying to get her up to speed on whats happening.
Waters yells at staffers for things like making eye contact with other aides. She unceremoniously fires people who give presentations that dont live up to her standards.

ETA: As noted below, this IS a very long article and I encourage all to read it. As for her alleged behavior with staffers, I've never heard this before and I have my sincere doubts about this allegation. For you new members, you can only quote FOUR paragraphs of an article per DU rules, so you can quote first four, last four, or any combination of paragraphs. I was lazy and only posted the first four paragraphs, hence my admonition to read the entire article.

(28,118 posts)Eye contact? Wtf?
But the difference is that Maxine has high expectations of others and of *herself.* Trump makes demands of others but has zilch expectations of himself. A person who thinks they're the greatest usually doesn't think they need to thrive to learn anything.

(49,376 posts)she was on the Judiciary Committee arguing against the impeachment of President Clinton, Committee Chair, Republican Henry Hyde, replied to her with a condescending comment, she raised her palm to him and cut him off in mid-sentence. She sternly told Hyde, "I don't want to hear it". Hyde just sat there with a dumbfounded look on his face.

(10,014 posts)which is quite long and spans her entire political career. It includes some of the GOOD she has done but I still don't understand how this "Makes Her Uniquely Suited To Take On Donald Trump".
Her base may love her fiery rhetoric but she often comes across in the media as having engaged her mouth before her brain which makes it easy to discount her and her effectiveness.
AND Her abusive attitude toward her staff should not be acceptable.

(37,457 posts)1- I quoted the first four paragraphs. That's all DU allows per its copyright rules (ask Skinner in ATA). I assume people will read the article. Forgive me for being lazy. I am a long-time forum member and lifetime Democratic Party voter (100%), so my laziness in no way reflects upon Congresswoman Waters.
2- I do not vouch for the accuracy of the article. This goes without saying.
3- I don't really quite agree with you about her effectiveness, but we can agree to disagree.
4- The alleged abusiveness goes to my point about accuracy.
Good day.
