9,886 inner-city elementary students are starting a revolution. Why are they tearing up the barren brown-green grass that surrounds their schools? To create vast Food Forests, with trees, vines, bushes, plants, and ground cover, all connected by long, winding paths. And the best part? These Food Forests are entirely edible.

Have you ever grown and eaten Moringa, Barbados Cherries, Cranberry Hibiscus, Malabar Spinach, Pigeon Peas, or Cuban Oregano? These are just a few of the 103 unique crops in our Food Forests. Students can tell you that Moringa has 2 times the calcium and 4 times the protein as milk, and they will let you know that just one Barbados cherry has the vitamin C of 18 oranges. As for the Cranberry Hibiscus, the bushes get stripped of their leaves as fast as they can grow, then popped in the mouths of students as they roam through their Forests, eating as they go.

Food Forest banana circles eat food trays, garden waste, and more bringing composting concepts to life.
In fact, every day in these peaceful sanctuaries, student lessons about nutrition come together naturally with reading, math, social studies, art, science and more. Science scores are up 67%. Student and families’ eating habits have improved by 50%. Food Forest harvests have transformed these kids’ cafeterias meals 1,000 times and 30,000+ harvest bags have gone home to help their families get the healthy benefits, too.

Named the #1 most promising obesity prevention program in the State of Florida, The Education Fund’s work is bringing thousands of kids and their families in tune with wellness through a deepened experience with nature and the entire food cycle. Now, we need your help! We have 24,703 students on an active wait list. Our vision is to reach all 171,827 elementary children in our Miami-Dade school district. With more than 70% of our kids on federal food aid, many living in food deserts, we need to help them NOW! We are committed to creating a model for the country. Don’t let these kids’ lives be endangered. Vote for Food Forests Revolution. Vote for a future of wellness.
