I've seen this kind of thing since Clinton. People boycotting, or threatening to, because of the current occupant. I can understand to some degree, but I'm not sure it is the best use of the opportunity. Instead, it would seem more useful to use the opportunity to "pierce the bubble" in which administration operate. Wear the ribbon, or the T-shirt, or some other form of symbol of ones issues. If given a chance, engage the occupant, or anyone with which you deal, on ones issues. Be cautious of course of being "used" or being treated as a prop. Refuse to physically do things which are contrary to your purpose. But use it as a form of reverse "bully pulpit" to speak truth to power.

Of course it could also be that we shouldn't really have started this tradition at all. It just politicizes something that is otherwise nonpolitical.

It's a silly tradition, made all the sillier when a President isn't much of a sports fan.

The Little League Champions, various scouting things, boys club, spelling bee champs, these kinds of things are probably a good idea. Before the kids get all political it can be a great day for them. Once you get to multi-million dollar professional athletes, it gets a bit dumber.

But youth championship teams from the west coast generally don't have the extra dough in their budgets for a side trip to DC. But yes, for Little Lebowski Achievers in the area a trip to the White House would be a thrill, and I wouldn't begrudge them that.
