(58,647 posts)On a more serious note, I used to pump gas at a Shell station (yeah, people did that) when a dollar would buy you 3 gallons of gas. You could drive all night.

(34,136 posts)When they let me use the car that had been passed down from my grandmother - to my parents and through two older sisters. Mom wanted me to have my own car so she didn't have to haul the feed and hay for my horse in hers.
My parents saved every gas receipt. When my sister was clearing out the old house she found the bundle of gas receipts from Sunoco. I'm sure my parents kept the receipts to keep track of how much gas I used so they could check if I was going places I wasn't supposed to. I wasn't stupid - if I was driving around I paid for the gas out of my own money and didn't use the Sunoco card. Gas then was eighteen cents a gallon for most of the time I drove that car.
Good thing - it was a massive, 1958 Buick Special four door sedan. I think it was supposed to get about 18 miles to the gallon (or less) but for a while it was using a lot more gas than expected. One day I ran out of gas and the friend that drove me to buy a gallon to put in it opened the hood to put a bit in the carburetor. He told me to pump the gas pedal to start it - then immediately screamed for me to "STOP!"
There was a hole in the gas pump and every time the gas pedal was pushed it squirted gas all over the engine compartment. The entire insulating blanket under the hood of the car was saturated with gas. I was lucky that the thing didn't catch fire.
My friend drove me home and explained to my Dad what was happening. Dad was much more blase about it and had me drive him to pick up the Buick so he could take it to the garage. The Buick lasted several more years in our family. After I went to college Dad sold it to a guy who cleaned it up and kept it as a collectible.

(1,786 posts)relatively speaking, the cost of gas is about the same. Unlike the last year of Bush Shrub when it was $4.50 here in Calif.
