(4,407 posts)you can't be addicted to it or that it can't ruin your life.
Not that I'm against legalization, if booze is legal, marijuana should be legal. It's just important, as a society, that we remember it is a drug.

(25,816 posts)And no, it's not addictive. And the only way it can ruin your life is if you
get tossed into jail.

(4,407 posts)That's just silly. Most drugs come from natural substances... Are you going to argue that opium, which in a natural substance in some poppies, is not a drug?

(4,407 posts)I know people who are in recovery from marijuana abuse and I've seen overuse cost people educations and jobs.

(25,816 posts)Still do. Raised 4 kids on my own, two college graduates, two in the USCG.
People may lose their jobs because pot is illegal, not because it's some
killer drug.
HopeAgain
(4,407 posts)unless they can't. I am not against pot, I just think it needs to be acknowledged that it can be abused like other drugs. Maybe not fatal like some, but I've seen kids smoke their way out of college and adults out of jobs. It should not be overused, and some people do, and some get addicted.
Just saying...

(10,819 posts)If we truly want to know the effects of long-term and/or short-term pot using, then the bans on testing said effects would be lifted. But . . . the alcohol and pharmaceutical lobbyists have spent big bucks to make sure that doesn't happen.
Just as anecdotal evidence, my youngest son suffered a TBA (traumatic brain injury) when he was 19. The pot did a far superior job in lessening the effects of that injury than any drug or subsequent drinking managed to do. Again, anecdotal evidence suggests a wide variety of ailments--stress disorder, epileptic disorders, chemotherapy side effects, etc.--are greatly aided/reduced by a nicely packed pipe or pot-laced goodies.
But we fail to test those effects, good or bad. Why is that?
Follow the money.
As for the addiction argument? Plenty of Americans are addicted to sugar for Christ's sake. We don't make a moral judgment about that. As a society, we've heard nothing but negatives about pot and pot users.
It's time for that to change. Yesterday.

(7,519 posts)I read an article that someone would have to smoke the equivalent of "an entire room full of bales of compressed marijuana stacked to the ceiling" within the space of one hour to get near the fatal amount of THC into their body.
This is, of course, not mixed with any other drug or alcohol.
So yeah, people can have their lives messed up by it, but they aren't going to accidentally kill themselves by getting stoned. Numerous people die from accidental alcohol poisoning every year.
The only feasible way to be killed by marijuana is if a truckload of it falls on you and crushes you to death.
Or if you're trapped in the aforementioned room and it is on fire and you die of suffocation via smoke inhalation.

(27,677 posts)The non-fatal consumption of 3000 mg/kg A THC by the dog and monkey would be comparable to a 154-pound human eating approximately 46 pounds (21 kilograms) of 1%-marihuana or 10 pounds of 5% hashish at one time. In addition, 92 mg/kg THC intravenously produced no fatalities in monkeys. These doses would be comparable to a 154-pound human smoking at one time almost three pounds (1.28 kg) of 1%-marihuana or 250,000 times the usual smoked dose and over a million times the minimal effective dose assuming 50% destruction of the THC by smoking.

(25,816 posts)I went to Willamette University for a year--then was expelled for
smoking pot. '69. Then tried Lane Community College before
dropping out. I lived right down the road from Ken Kesey in

(7,519 posts)Alternately, my former neighbor had tourettes of the physical kind (he didn't shout obscenities, he would just develop uncontrollable involuntary muscle twitches) and he had a prescription for Marinol, which is a soft gel capsule that looked like vitamin E and which contained THC oil which was effective in reducing his symptoms. According to him it produced "a very gentle relaxing buzz" that came on slowly and lasted for a couple of hours.
Also, my friend who returned from a Colorado visit showed me a disposable THC "vape pen" which produced no smell. The technology is advancing.

Right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Thursday told a jury that he believes George Soros is somehow behind a plot to make the effects of smoking marijuana stronger than ever before.
As reported by BuzzFeeds Charlie Warzel, Jones was asked about his drug and alcohol use by attorney Bobby Newman, who is representing Jones ex-wife Kelly in the custody battle over the couples three children.
During his testimony, Jones claimed that he smoked marijuana once a year to monitor its strength, and he claimed that its gotten progressively stronger over the years and he thinks that George Soros is somehow involved.
