How Bernie Sanders Is Uniting the Democratic Party

http://democratizeus.com/2017/04/19/how-bernie-sanders-is-uniting-the-democratic-party/

<snip>
This week Tom Perez and Bernie Sanders started traveling together spreading the concept of unity. For Sanders’ it’s not unity for just Democrats. “If the Democratic Party is going to succeed—and I want to see it succeed —it’s gonna have to open its door to independents,” Sanders told Hayes. “There are probably more independents in this country than Democrats or Republicans. It’s got to open its doors to working people and to young people, create a grassroots party. That’s what we need.”

====================

Bernie said he is not a Democrat. Can Democrats still work with him or is he too far out of the mainstream to help the Party?

In my opinion, progressive Democrats helped Bernie a lot in his primary against Hillary. But, I am not so sure he would have done so well without Democrats helping him in the primaries and the caucuses? I believe he would say that is true?

The Democrats and Sanders' Independents should reach some sort of compromise, in my opinion. They are different but they have a lot in common.

I could think of situations where Republicans are running unopposed or with token opposition. There are races that "Independents" could run against the Republicans. Democrats should announce their support for Independents running against Republicans. This would make them stronger. In return, progressive Independents would announce their support for Democratic candidates when they were opposed by Republicans. In my opinion, that would be a fair swap-off.

But, it is better to work as a coalition than as political opponents, when we have so much in common.

Independents are not Democrats and Democrats are not Independents. We should agree upon that, don't you think?

It all seemed so feasible until " In return, progressive Independents would..."

That's where I think we depart reality.

That's the long and short of it, and whatever gains we make in 2018 we have The Donald to thank for it. You can pretend that BS will be the reason, but there will be nothing to substantiate it.
