In my quest to become the most unpopular non-entity on the DU,

I will now make a pro-Bernie post. Those who noticed at all know I was not a Sanders supporter in the primary, putting me in the minority. Now all the Hillary supporters will side-eye me too But here goes... Yeah, we all said some things back then in the heat of the moment, but I don't hold a grudge. Anyone who wants to fight Trump and the GOP now, let's fight! I'm in! Bygones are bygones.

So onto the pro-Bernie part.... People are mad that he is supporting some random mayoral candidate in Nebraska who holds a view that is not in the progressive mainstream. Not sure of the deets because I am not particularly interested in local Nebraska politics. But I do know a bit about the socialist/economic populist history of the very white and culturally conservative state. I know that they split their votes between Dems and Reps. And I know that their Senator is up for re-election in 2018. So I am guessing, and this is only a guess, that the DNC WANTS Sanders to campaign there because they think he is popular and that they might have a shot at the senate seat down the line. Plus, we are SUPPOSED to be challenging them in all 50 states. In states like NE, that means Democrats with more conservative social views.

I do not accept the 'slippery slope' argument that if we allow a few red-state Dems with conservative views into the party, the entire party will be corrupted. Black Protestants and Catholics are more conservative on abortion than white 'progressives', but they are still the members of the party. And the party still champions pro-choice. Dunno why we are losing our minds over a guy running for mayor in NE...

And the Ossoff race in Atlanta, not sure a Sanders' endorsement would be a help there. It's upscale business Republicans and POC. If you recall, Sanders did poorly with Dems in the South to start and I doubt that a bunch of country club Republicans are interested in an avowed socialist with wacky hair from Vermont. It might have been a tactical decision for him to avoid talking about that race at all, not a reflection of his views.

So yeah, I get that it is hard to accept that a guy who was so loud about ideological purity is now playing political games for the team, but maybe he LEARNED something during his last race. Maybe he is being more PRACTICAL now. What he is doing kinda makes sense for Dems as well as for Bernie. Or maybe he is just a hypocritical blowhard. He is a politician, so that is kinda a pre-requisite. Either way, I am not getting myself into a lather. Primary is OVER. Sanders is on the team. I am a team player who wants to win big elections and grind the GOP's face INTO THE MUD. I want to stand on their necks and make them say uncle. I want to piss in their Wheaties, make them eat it and then say "Thank you, can I have some more!". I want to put the traitors in jail and restore some dignity to the government. I want our country to run by a real leader and not a greedy, craven, narcissistic clown. If I have to make nice with Sanders to do that, no problem. I still love Hillary. She is still my girl. But she would understand more than anyone the political necessity of working with Sanders and his faction to beat the GOP. It's not personal, it's just how politics works.

Sanders and his group cannot do it without mainline Dems. Conversely, mainline Dems need Sanders and his group too. No one goes under the bus if we plan to win. We gotta make this work, people.

OK, flame on....

frequently wrong, given that I have perfected neither the art of Vulcan mind melds or mind reading. Your make some good points about why Sanders may have done or not done some of the things he did or didn't.

I caucused for Bernie in the primaries (nobody threw a chair, damnit!) and voted for Hilary in the general election - both times happily.* I really don't understand why people are at each other's throats around here now.

* Well, I was recovering from a small tumble down the stairs at the time of the NV caucus. It happened a couple days before and I was still bruised and sore. The folding metal chairs hurt to sit in and it hurt to get up and walk around. The room was stuffy, I ran out of reading material, and it took a lot longer than it should have. harumph

Dems are using some pretty smart strategy with their usage of Bernie (or not), allowing Bernie to reaffirm his independent status, etc.

They've desperately needed a "closer" with independents and the white working-class, and Bernie's a great pick.

I still cannot figure out why people are so upset about Bernie not endorsing or campaigning for Ossoff. Did Hillary campaign for him? Did any other DNC person do so? Why is Bernie's apparent lack of support getting everyone so upset?

Also, plenty of red-state Democrats with conservative views have been in the party for a very long time. In fact, all those Dems who do things like vote for various Republican nominees or proposals are that sort of Dem. The very fact that Gorsuch got confirmed is one example. Or Clarence Thomas. Or, but I've made my point, I hope.

Sanders, while not officially a Democrat, really does stand for the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. The main stream of the Party, especially the DNC, long ago sold the rest of us out. I am genuinely sorry that Bernie did not win the nomination. I will point out once again, as unpopular as this may be, that early on the polling clearly showed that he'd beat Trump in the general election, while Hillary would not. Reflect on that once again, if you will.

But moving on, since Trump is in the White House, happily and blithely dismantling everything that makes this country even livable, we need to think long and hard how we will undo his damage. I honestly feat that may not be possible.

Sometimes I wonder if it's not to late to start over, perhaps getting myself born in a sensible Scandinavian country (currently Finland would be my choice) but as things are, I'm stuck with this lifetime in this country. My only consolation is that I'm nearly 70, and I won't have to live with all of this too many decades longer. Oh, and I'm becoming more and more glad that neither of my sons has reproduced, so I don't have to despair about the world my grandchildren will have to live in.

Sanders knows this and during primaries if I remember correctly Sanders was received well in some of the red states one would not think he would . The 2018 Senate is interesting .......

May not like this link but mello may deserve a new look at before people decide one way or another about him

" Did you get that? Politico’s reporter, Elana Schor brands the very pro-choice Mello–who has expressed strong support for Planned Parenthood–”anti-abortion” because he supported a bill that requires abortionists to tell women they have a right to receive information that could impact their decision.
