Speaking at the hour-long rally, U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., railed against the Trump Administration’s proposed cuts to 200 U.S. research institutions; a 31 percent cut to the EPA’s budget; a $900 million cut to the Department of Energy and a $5.8 billion cut to the National Institutes of Health.

“The Trump Administration does not uphold evidence-backed science as a policy priority, and that has to change,” DeFazio told the crowd.

Science, health care and social programs are being cut to fund other priorities, he said.

“We’re cutting to fund the big, beautiful, stupid wall between the United States and Mexico,” and a $54 billion increase to the Pentagon, DeFazio said.

“Trump says, ‘America First,’ I say American Values First,” DeFazio said to loud applause and cheers.
