Nothing against the Obamas personally, of course. But if we are dependent upon great individuals, instead of the ability of the public to generate new leaders from among ourselves, then the whole idea of having a republic instead of a monarchy was a flawed experiment.

I'm still having trouble getting my head around the idea that a guy 2 years older than me is an elder Statesman. But yes, we definitely need to tap into our institutional memory of things that historically work.
