(505 posts)Percentage differs from country to country, but they are definitely everywhere. Heck, even Germany, where a heavy focus is put on teaching the dangers of facism and authoritarianism, has ~10% deplorables. How can we fix this? I don't know. Maybe good, socialist policies can help to stop the deplorable growth, if that is caused by automation and related job loss.
However, I fear it's not that easy. Many deplorables in Germany are quite well off and skilled. Most of them simply seem to hate the fact that our government cares for refugees more than it cares for wealthy, skilled deplorables, even though they are wealthy and can perfectly live on their own. They believe Muslims / refugees are bringing crime, violence and terror into the country, while costing a lot of tax payers' money. So they want to close the borders, and only allow a limited number of highly-skilled immigrants each year (and maybe a few families or gays or Christians from war zones as refugees).
I'm not sure if their current apparent support (-ish, i.e. most probably are opposed to gay marriage, but say they support equal rights for civil unions) for gays and lesbians is because they actually believe in it, or because they want to use homophobia as a talking point against Muslims. One of their chancellor candidates is now a lesbian mom of two sons, living in a relationship with her registered partner...
In any case, I'm deeply worried. Especially since this seems to happen in most countries, so the thought of "you could always flee to some safe place" is not very reassuring. What's the reason? Coincidence? Facebook? Putin?

(19,972 posts)I suspect some people in more egalitarian countries see some people in other countries becoming multimillionaires and billionaires and they want some of that action for themselves. So they're ready to vote for neoliberals not fully realizing that much of that extreme wealth for a few comes at the expense of the many who aren't wealthy. Perhaps a lot of people are being overcome by greed and envy.
I think Macron is considered a neoliberal; the problem is that Le Pen is worse. Ugh.

(9,670 posts)What you heard was an aberration. There must be a recessive gene that appears in 1 out of every 5 human beings th.at directs them to follow authoritarians without question and force others to do the same. Americans gravitate to the GOP. You may have met a couple of the Danish variety.
