Republican Michigan Governor Vetoes GOP Voter Suppression Law

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/07/03/510776/republican-michigan-governor-vetoes-gop-voter-suppression-law/

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) bucked his fellow Republicans on Tuesday by vetoing a voter ID law crafted by GOP members of the state legislature, the Detroit Free Press reports:

Among the bills vetoed was one requiring photo ID for first voter registration or to obtain an absentee ballot, a requirement that African-American activists claimed was an attempt to deter voting by the urban poor.

Snyder said in a statement that “he appreciates the issue of ensuring voters are eligible and U.S. citizens, however this legislation could create voter confusion among absentee voters.”

(snip)
Snyder also invalidated a requirement that voters check a box on an electoral ballot or application affirming they are citizens — which could have intimidated voters who didn’t understand the question or weren’t native English speakers — as well as new restrictions and requirements on the operations of third party groups registering voters in the state.

Slap my face and call me Sally....never thought I'll see the day that Snyder did the right thing for the people. So, can he now work to dismantle the awful statue, Public Act #4.

Seriously. This, coming from the gov of MI, of all places. He's pretty much
disenfranchised the entire state already. Maybe he's just trying to look fair
and balanced for the purpose of re-election. Kind of like John Roberts'
decision? Toss in the bone...Maybe he desperately NEEDS the absentee votes?
God knows.

Snyder is an asshole, along with Scott, Walker, Kasich. May
they rot in hell.

I happen to know this for reasons which I can not discuss but it is true.

Well OK maybe a little insane. He's far down the "All in for business" track and he'd bust unions "'cause it's good for business" but he does actually believe his business stuff. He wants to do right by the state and isn't an ideologue. He's wrong but not because he's drools like Walker does or anything. So he does still believe all the propaganda about our being a "democracy" and everything. Thus he will actually try to make that work for the people of Michigan as he sees it.

He's infuriated me more than once as governor of my state, but he deserves credit for rebuking his Republican colleagues on this one. I hope he doesn't give in to what will no doubt be continued efforts to suppress voter turnout by state Republicans.
