This opinion (from April 26 WaPo) sums it all up very well:
First, we saw Ivanka Trump get booed in Germany trying to vouch for her father as a protector of the family. We also saw the chairman and ranking Democrat of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee declare that they believed that former national security adviser Michael Flynn (who didnt make it through the first month on the job) broke the law in failing to disclose monies he was receiving from Russian and Turkish clients during the campaign. This president, to put it mildly, has a corruption problem, a nepotism problem and a competency problem. His staff is stocked with extremists (e.g. Stephen K. Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, Stephen Miller), hapless characters (Reince Priebus, Sean Spicer) and unqualified relatives (Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner) with substantial conflicts of interest.
Second, Trumps emoluments problems, conflicts of interest and refusal to release his tax returns become more hobbling with each passing week. Whether it is the State Department hawking Mar-a-Lago or a tax plan that likely saves him millions (if we had his returns, wed know for sure), Trump leaves us wondering whether he views the presidency as another of his get-rich-quick schemes. Needless to say, Republicans would be apoplectic if Hillary Clinton had done a fraction of this.
Third, he has no appealing legislative agenda. The latest incarnation of Trumpcare (3.0, or is it 4.0?) would be even less appealing to voters and GOP moderates as the last version. It still contains a big tax cut for the rich, still makes insurance more expensive for older Americans in rural areas and still rolls back Medicaid but now states can also opt out of the list of essential health benefits. Its unclear how this would get through Senate reconciliation. Trumps half-baked tax plan which apparently would grant enormous tax benefits to the rich and open up a gaping hole in the budget doesnt seem like an attractive proposition for anyone outside his core base. Trumps agenda, in short, forces GOP House members to choose between doing nothing and doing things the voters hate. Good luck to House Republicans trying to explain themselves to voters in 2018.

(37,428 posts)He's supposed to be pretty good at golf, for instance.
He appears to know how to commit sexual assault.
I know of no other skills or talents.

(64,995 posts)If it wasn't good at self-promotion, we'd have never heard of it. There are richer people, more charismatic rich people, and rich people who didn't grow up with a silverspoon in their mouth.
So, there is one skill, although not that attractive a one.

(37,428 posts)It's all done for him, by the public's awe at displays of wealth. Free airtime, media afraid to poke holes in the legends of the 1%...all a sham.
I think his lawyers must be competent, having helped him conceal the relative paucity of his fortune. He's certainly relentless at his self-promotion, but it's all rather ridiculous, really.

(37,428 posts)...but I don't think he ever trained for the sort of scrutiny a president can't avoid.
He's like a Russian nesting doll, but one in which everynesting turns out to be empty.

(64,995 posts)Absolute agreement between us. It's always been smoke and mirrors, and everything i said would not have led anybody to success, if they didn't start out with 9 figures.
I like your nesting doll analogy!

(47,470 posts)Yesterday CBS News went to talk to teens and they still love him, still think he is doing "right" - whatever this means.
Honestly we get the "leaders" that we deserve. And I think until their last breath - coming soon thanks to this "savior" - they will still believe in him.

(17,276 posts)That was so unrepresentative of the Millenials. In the car yesterday on NPR they were just saying how the Millenials did not support Trump. It looked like the bunch on CBS were hand picked to be positive. Or else it's a conservative university or something.
I'm not trying to slam CBS because they are usually pretty hard on Donnie.

(82,849 posts)My, my, Jennifer Rubin used to be such a dependable voice for just about anything Republicans blarped out into the public arena. She'd defend the most asinine stuff, with a huffy follow-up for anyone who doubted her deathless wisdom or the inherent infallibility of the Republicans. Now the scales done fell from her eyes, hallelujah!
How long before she scampers back into the bosom of Republicans? I'm going to need a LOT more expiation and penance, but this is a decent column.
