It's good to engage them in conversation and try to politely educate them about a few of things they were talking about. They are at least expressing an interest in trying to be involved. Also, people can be different in one on one conversation. She could be just really nervous and a horrible public speaker. Some people really get all out of sorts with speaking publicly.

I think it makes people less likely to get involved if they think they are going to be made fun of in a public way. This was some city hall meeting some place in CA back in 2008, and yet we're all talking about it almost 10 years later and a lot of us don't even live there. If people think they are going to be publicly shamed for expressing themselves, they will stop doing it. That's not good for our democracy. It also makes democrats look bad to be making fun of people like this. It plays into that intellectual elitism bit we are accused of all the time by the republicans.
