It would be poetic, however, if the RW vitriol launched at Roberts led him to reconsider his role as conservative front man on the Court.I thought of this watching the former poster boy of the GOP, Jonathan Krohn, talk about his awakening to the hatefulness and close mindedness of his conservative colleagues. David Brock had a similar epiphany and then suffered the concerted and public assault on his reputation by those he thought were his friends.
The leaks from the RW Justices and clerks is unprecedented. It is a violation not only of tradition but also the comity that is necessary to do the people's business.
I hope this hatred directed at him is instructive. It is probably too much to think he has it in him to become a John Paul Stevens or even a David Souter. But maybe he can adopt the approach that he said he had when he testified during his confirmation hearings rather than being Scalia's lapdog.
