I used to enjoy watching the national news...

Last edited Tue May 2, 2017, 01:29 AM - Edit history (1)

But now it's gotten too repulsive every time Trump is shown speaking on screen. His whiny nasal voice, his sniffing and snorting, and even worse, the constant lying and conning. It's revolting.

For a while I was just muting the sound when he came on. But his mug has gotten even redder and uglier with every passing day. So I just turn off the TV entirely.

I'm not about to "tune in, turn on, and drop out", just yet, but I think it's going to be at least four years of getting my news from sources that don't show Trump.

Anyone have suggestions for Trump-free news zones?

1. I am down to local news

Even having a hard time with my favorites Sam Bee, Last Week Tonight, Bill Maher, The View, they all show clips and I can't even stand them.

2. mute and have something to read for a few minutes.

I share your revulsion. We Tivo almost everything we watch so I just fast forward stuff. I don't watch his interviews but there are always clips.

If you can't FF it, then have the mute on and read a magazine until it's over. I often crochet with the TV on, so am mostly listening to the news shows. Easier not to look!

In general if you stay away from cable news, you will avoid the most disturbing stuff. PBS is more tame and has fewer clips. BBC is good, too. They actually will cover world events that the national shows don't seem to have any time for! Found on your local PBS channel.

3. Oh, just find something else to watch during that time

I turned them all off in 2004 and the amazing part is how easy that habit was to break. I just realized I was sick of being lied to by omission and I was done with them.

I might turn the local station on for a few minutes during the weather report, but that's it. I get my news from print, online and through subscription and I'm far better informed and far less furious.

I haven't had to listen to much of that Noo Yawk cokehead delivery of his. I did listen to part of his hate rally in PA to see how bad it's gotten. It's bad. It's about as bad as it can get.

4. Oh thank God

It's nice to know I'm not alone in this predicament.

I only get broadcast TV, so BBC cable news is out, but I can stream online.

Now that summer is here, I guess when the network news comes on I can busy myself in the garden or work on some other project around the house and garage. Probably time much better spent than upsetting my digestive system with T***p.

Thanks!

5. Before you go to a Trumpy-free news zone,

Go to General Discussions and read TheFerret's most recent post.

6. I hardly "watch" the news.

Then I am a BBC World Service junkie. Not a Trump Free Zone, but definitely less of him... simply because there's tons of news around the world. French elections, UK elections, Brexit, Syria, Russia/Ukraine, Venezuela, Jacob Zuma, North Korea, China's new aircraft carrier... loads of news. I listen to the Africa feed for even less Trump.

Wife is CNN junkie. But we have a horrible schedule - she works days, I work late evenings... so we barely see each other.

If you wanting less Trump, basically steer clear of US cable news networks. Local channels for local news, and a mix of international broadcasters for international news. CGTN (former China Central TV News) is surprisingly balanced for non-Chinese news. NHK is good and well respected, as is France 24, DW, Euronews, Al Jazeera and more. RT... "Radio Moscow" with pictures. Tons of international choice.

7. I don't know if there are any but Stephanie Miller is a favorite of mine.

She plays clips then she and her crew mock, ridicule and skewer DFT.
