If GOP Passes Trumpcare, Its Dead

If GOP Passes Trumpcare, It’s Dead
House Republicans are poised to pass the single biggest cut to a public benefit in American history. They deserve to pay a price—and will.
Michael Tomasky 05.02.17 12:00 AM ET

Here’s the parallel universe Washington has become these days: The new Republican health care bill is even worse than the old ones, because they had to placate the hard-right members. Naturally, this worse bill seems to have a much better chance of passing.

House Republicans may hold a vote Wednesday. One presumes that after that late March fiasco, they now have the sense to schedule a vote if and only if they’re certain they have the votes for passage. They’ll be counting noses right up to Wednesday afternoon.

Passage of this bill into law would be a disaster for the country. Up to 20 million people could lose their health care coverage.

People with serious illnesses could be screwed out of coverage again or charged far more than others under a provision that would allow states to bypass Obamacare requirements about covering those with preexisting conditions.

The whopping cuts to Medicaid in the bill, wrote Jonathan Cohn Monday, would probably constitute the biggest single cut to a public benefit in the country’s history, bringing “widespread hardship to the millions of people who depend on it for everything from opioid treatment to cancer care.”

If Trump and the Republicans actually do manage to repeal Obamacare, I think it would then be a near-certainty that they’d lose control of the House of Representatives. Why? Because a large number of the vulnerable House Republicans are in one of two circumstances, or sometimes both. One, they’re in states that took the Medicaid expansion, which means they’re representing many flesh-and-blood humans who will lose their coverage. Or two, they’re in districts that aren’t deep red, or are even a pale shade of blue, where approval for Obamacare is presumably pretty high.

1. I'm sorry, but I disagree with this argument.

The Republican base puts hatred of non-White people ahead of their own health. These Republicans can easily spin their vote as denying health care to the "lazy" others and still win in their districts.

4. Certainly some of their districts could remain safe.

Many would not, and that is why we see the current nonsense going on, in which the GOP swears to Jaybus that they are gonna repeal, then refuses even to put its members to a vote.

Until they figure out a way not to kick tens of millions off healthcare before 2018 while still pretending to work, they might continue the charade.

5. I've been thinking this myself. Can you imagine the upcoming nightly news stories?

Mr. Jones, who worked his entire life in coal mines, can no longer continue his medical treatment for black lung disease. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a child with leukemia and are no longer able to obtain medical treatment. Followup story: Mr. and Mrs. Smith's little child died due to not having affordable access to leukemia treatment. Millions of Americans no longer have access to health care especially in struggling communities following the closing of coal mines (or other industries). Nursing homes have been closing their doors as seniors no longer can afford to pay and thousands of employees laid off. Seniors living in shelters because they couldn't afford their premiums. Elderly Americans angry because they cannot afford treatment, etc., etc., etc.

as if everything is honky dory and the reports are all "anecdotal" or "exaggerated" and "fake news"... They have already primed the pump for that inevitability. They would only wake up if a "2006" suddenly happens (where Democrats re-took the house after 12 years as the minority party), but the damage would have already been done.

People like my 70 year old sister and and her husband.

Both are ill.

They did not like President Obama.

So they voted their hate.

Tough on them.

Republicans worship their Fuhrer uber alles, and they have repeatedly demonstrated that no candidate is too extreme or too unqualified to get their vote.
