White and wealthy voters gave victory to Donald Trump, exit polls show

In the end, according to exit polls, the election result seems to have been more about the clear backing of America’s white and wealthy voters for Donald Trump – including white graduates, and white female voters.

Far from being purely a revolt by poorer whites left behind by globalisation, who did indeed turn out in greater numbers for the Republican candidate than in 2012, Trump’s victory also relied on the support of the middle-class, the better-educated and the well-off.

Of the one in three Americans who earn less than $50,000 a year, a majority voted for Clinton. A majority of those who earn more backed Trump.

It could only be correct if it were the white and wealthy voters who gave him the victory in the states he won (the rust belt states, for example). It doesn't matter if he got more white and wealthy voters than Hillary did in NY, because Hillary still won NY, so those votes did not give Trump his victory. Since our election does not turn on the popular vote, the headline is wrong unless they are talking about specific states Trump won.

It is the author's job to provide an article that actually justifies the headline (unless s/he works for a clickbait site).

Saying that Trump got more white/wealthy voters (which is what the article says) does not mean that's the reason he won (which is what the headline says), because in our electoral college system, the location of those voters is paramount. If getting more votes nationwide counted for anything, Hillary would be president.

Rich whites, poor whites, white men, white women, educated whites, poorly educated whites... yada yada. End of story.

I'm not sure if stories like this are helpful at this point. We're already pretty divided. Thanks, guardian.

overwhelmingly.

Some scenarios claim it is poor poor pitiful white. Rust belt....incorrect. Rich whites were overwhelming.

Not sure why you have such an issue with this on a Democratic board.

Unfortunately, the election was business as usual. Most whites voted for the repub. 50k isn't wealthy, and that stat wasn't broken down by race. The only thing shocking is that more repubs didn't jump ship with Donald Trump as the nominee.

The fact that most whites voted for an incompetent clown can lead to feelings of resentment or worse, which is what prompted my sarcastic "thanks, guardian." What now?
