Check out the Google homepage today, and you’ll see that the search engine giant isn’t just celebrating America’s Independence Day, it’s also honoring Oklahoma folk icon Woody Guthrie.

Today’s Google doodle features a guitar and the words “This Land Was Made For You And Me” scripted in patriotic red, white and blue. Of course, those are the lyrics to Guthrie’s most famous and enduring song, the inclusive anthem “This Land Is Your Land.”

Throughout 2012, the world is celebrating Woody Guthrie’s legacy during his centennial year. The legendary singer-songwriter was born July 14, 1912, in Okemah.

He died of Huntington’s disease on Oct. 3, 1967, at the age of 55, but not before writing some 3,000 songs, along with essays, newspaper columns and his partially fictionalized autobiography “Bound for Glory.”
