cathy mcmorris rodgers voted ACHA because it covers her son's pre-existing condition

Cathy McMorris Rodgers: My son has a preexisting condition. He’s one of the reasons I voted for the AHCA.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers is seen May 14, 2007, holding her newborn baby, Cole, on his two-week birthday. The congresswoman wrote a column Thursday in the Washington Post about her son and the reasoning behind her health care vote. (COURTESY JILL STRAIT / Courtesy of Jill Strait)

Hearing late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s emotional monologue this week about his son’s condition and his family’s experience in the moments after his birth, I had a flashback to the day my son was born and we learned he had Down syndrome.

My husband and I had a lot of questions about Cole’s future. Whether he’d have health care shouldn’t have had to be one of them. When you’re facing years of doctor’s appointments, you want to know that having a preexisting condition, such as an extra 21st chromosome or a heart defect, won’t prevent you or your loved ones from accessing the care you need.

Protections for children such as Cole Rodgers and Billy Kimmel have long existed, as they should. And despite what people are saying, House Republicans aren’t seeking to strip these protections – or anyone’s protections – away.

It’s the people we love – our children, friends and neighbors – who are the inspiration behind our American Health Care Act, which we passed in the House on Thursday.

. . . .

She also HAAAAAAAAAAAAATES the PPACA . . . almost desperately . . .

In March 2015, McMorris Rodgers posted a Facebook comment stating "this week marks the 5th anniversary of #Obamacare being signed into law. Whether it's turned your tax filing into a nightmare, you're facing skyrocketing premiums, or your employer has reduced your work hours, I want to hear about it."[49] Instead, she found her Facebook page almost exclusively filled with testimonials to the benefits of the Affordable Care Act.[50][51] Despite this, on March 28, 2015 McMorris Rodgers held a press conference about Obamacare in which she said nothing about the overwhelmingly positive comments she'd received from her constituents and instead rehashed five stories lifted from the House Republican leadership website that described problems with Obamacare.

Congress will be using their own health plan.

On the other hand, your children dying would leave more for hers. So think of it as being patriotic.

Maine instituted their high risk pool in 2011, and unlike the AHCA, funded it with a fee on all Mainers, healthy and sick, nonetheless it was already faltering and would have raised costs for sick people fivefold had the ACA not became effective in 2012. Maine was saved by the ACA coming into full force in 2012, dramatically expanding the number of insured people in Maine and further subsidizing Maine's high risk pool occupants.

This Maine high risk pool analogy is all the rage among Republicans trying to justify their AHCA vote and it is total bullshit. TPM has a good article explaining how the AHCA high risk pool provisions are nothing like the Maine "invisible" high risk pool under the ACA:

cruel bill slashes. Unless she is fabulously wealthy, this asshole better look into what happens when her son is an adult and still needs medical care and services that Medicaid currently provides to adults with disabilities. Medicaid waiver programs help adults with disabilities to live in and participate in their local communities. Without this type of funding many families would be unable to care for their relatives with disabilities at home, resulting in institutionalization and isolation and sometimes homelessness.

This woman is sickeningly IGNORANT of the struggles of people with disabilities to lead a meaningful life with DIGNITY.

So of course little Cole will continue to be covered, because Rodgers can be pretty confident that the decent people who govern Washington will not opt out of pre-existing condition coverage. I don't advise Rep. Sanctimonious move to Texas or Mississippi or Alabama or Idaho, though. Because the troglodyte Republicans who run those states will indeed strip those protections away from their citizens.

But since it will be state legislatures and governors consigning people to their early graves, Rep. Rodgers' conscience - small as it is - will remain clear.
