I pointed this out to a co-worker who had trouble with the French in general. We got along fine with a dozen words and sign language. I actually lost weight while eating like crazy.

and people do more walking. Also they seem to relax and enjoy their food more instead of wolfing it down like a stressed out American.

I had French and Italian classmates and I was always amazed at how they can eat so much and stay so skinny.

They do eat slowly. Several courses eating when we were invited to a managers home. Cigarettes between courses and plenty of wine throughout.

For fun, we counted only 4 fat people over the time span of 4 or 5 weeks. But, the new McDonalds (which there were 3 of in the suburbs where we were) were filling up fast. At one intersection down town there were 3 McDonalds on 3 of the corners and a McDonalds knockoff on the 4th. Haven't been back for more than 10 years, but I'm sure you'd count more than 4 fat people now. Sad! The only junk they're not eating is French Fries. (of course).

is an extraordinary cook and doesn't believe in junk food, took their kids to it as a treat. They fell in love with McDonald's and got it once/week on the way to their Normandy place every weekend. Kids are all grown now and not junk food eaters in spite of that!

In addition to the fast food and no snacking issue, they don't eat all the processed foods that are such a big part of the American diet.

He's not religious. At all. He's got the wool pulled over their eyes.

I doubt he has much of a problem with science or even really doubts climate change is happening either.

He takes the positions he does solely to pander to "his base" and "rally his troops."

That is all.

He knows better, but he does it anyway. And that is what makes him so despicable. And so dangerous.

It's got to be a very uneasy coalition of the religious, national security, corporate, and bigots.

Surely some of them must understand they benefit from science.

So Macron is just exhibiting his very thorough understanding of colloquial American English.

16. We benefited from Germany's scientists. Could lose our tech economy.
Mon May 8, 2017, 10:10 AM
May 2017

During and after World War II, German science was decimated and scientists moved to the US.
Those scientists were essential in our aerospace and rocket industry, our medical industry, our nuclear industry and our semiconductor and tech industry. Andy Grove, founder of Intel, was a refugee from Europe (Hungarian, and younger than the German scientists during WWII, but the idea is the same). Einstein left Germany/Austria and settled at Princeton. Von Neumann left Germany for Princeton. Von Neumann invented the computer.

Before the war, Germany had one of the biggest scientific enterprises in the world. Before the scientists left Germany, the two biggest science journal languages were German and English.

After the war, those scientists moved to the US, English became the language of science, and the US became the place young scientists moved to. Google, Apple, Intel, cancer treatments all came out of the world-leading US science industry.

The GOP is trying to destroy that. They are hurting America.

for him to capture more of the market. But it also could help support climate change tech in the US in (hopefully) spurring this administration to see the competitive economic benefit that we could lose.

Biggest science funder - USA (also the place where most young scientists go and work and start companies. Not a coincidence)
Next: Germany, Japan

France well below those.

... but at least in Germany, many scientists are used to reading and writing (in rough shape) articles in English and working with people from all over the world (using English). Well, at least in the field of computer science and probably other STEM (or MINT, as we call it) fields. I guess it might be different for political sciences, some Humanities, etc.

And while some Germans complain about immigrants who apparently don't speak German and don't want to learn it, I think they mostly refer to immigrants from Turkey, Syria, Eastern Europe or generally Africa, and they most likely complain because they are racist. English speakers might actually be welcome because they.. you know, "counter the Muslim invasion".
