Former President Obama warned President Donald Trump against hiring Mike Flynn as his national security adviser, three former Obama administration officials tell NBC News.

The warning, which has not been previously reported, came less than 48 hours after the November election when the two sat down for a 90-minute conversation in the Oval Office.

The revelation comes on a day that former acting Attorney General Sally Yates is expected to testify that Flynn misled the White House about his contacts with Russia's ambassador to the United States.

NBC News has asked the Trump administration for a response.

3. Trump onboarded Flynn to stick it to Obama

The story was that Flynn was too hardcore for the Obama Administration and that he spoke too tough about Muslims. Well, he is a xenophobe but he's also a nutcase and a crook. But Trump just had to stick it to Obama, right?

But now we're going to hear from Trump how it was Obama's fault for giving him clearance and what-not.

7. Trump is setting himself up for a hard fall

Not only was Flynn fired by Obama, but his earlier vetting under the previous administration happened years before the Russian fiasco. If Trump considers Flynn's Russian-related activities in 2016 and his subsequent hiring-on as National Security Adviser to be the result of an oversight on the part of the Obama administration, he will need a sophisticated time machine to rearrange chronological events. Not gonna happen. The Trump transition team also vetted Flynn, just months ago. They knew the guy's history, and brought him in anyway. Demagoguery is not likely to work this time around.

Obama's warning pre-dated the concerns inside the government about Flynn's contacts with the Russian ambassador, one of the officials said. Obama passed along a general caution that he believed Flynn was not suitable for such a high level post, the official added.

The fact that Obama's advice fell on deaf ears predisposed to hiring Flynt regardless of his history comes as no surprise.
