It wasn't just Hillary he trashed, he also resurrected the Marc Rich pardon right before the election.

The pardon was bad, no doubt about it, but it does go to Comey's mindset. The only, very small joy in this is that Comey now knows a small part of the truth.

...just at the point when, after his letter, the media was looking to start investigating possible misdeeds in Trump's campaign as well.

Once that got the FBI kibosh, it was all "Hillary's e-mails!!!" all the time for about a week thereafter...a week which may have been crucial to the outcome.
