NYT Editorial - Donald Trumps Firing of James Comey

The NY Times has lost some credibility for providing a platform for climate science denialists, but sometimes they get it right.

The American people — not to mention the credibility of the world’s oldest democracy — require a thorough, impartial investigation into the extent of Russia’s meddling with the 2016 presidential election on behalf of Donald Trump and, crucially, whether high-ranking members of Mr. Trump’s campaign colluded in that effort.

By firing the F.B.I. director, James Comey, late Tuesday afternoon, President Trump has cast grave doubt on the viability of any further investigation into what could be one of the biggest political scandals in the country’s history.

The explanation for this shocking move — that Mr. Comey’s bungling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server violated longstanding Justice Department policy and profoundly damaged public trust in the agency — is impossible to take at face value. Certainly Mr. Comey deserves all the criticism heaped upon him for his repeated missteps in that case, but just as certainly, that’s not the reason Mr. Trump fired him.

Mr. Trump had nothing but praise for Mr. Comey when, in the final days of the presidential campaign, he informed Congress that the bureau was reopening the investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s emails. “He brought back his reputation,” Mr. Trump said at the time. “It took a lot of guts.”

Here we go again. But this isn't about a 5th-rate break-in and the coverup.

4. Comey made that statement about receiving new information about Hillary Clinton's emails

because a prosecutor in NY contacted him and said he had emails from his investigation into Weiner and sex child trafficking. The NY prosecutor told Comey he would send him the emails because he knew some would be pertinent to the FBI's investigation. Comey did not evidently act fast enough for the NY prosecutor because a little bit later he told Comey he needed to start arresting people; if he did not, he (the NY prosecutor) would call a press conference and tell the public the information he had, and he would make arrests.

So Comey made the statement here because he had earlier testified in a Congressional hearing. He was under oath at that hearing. At the end of the session, he told the people conducting the hearing that if anything new occurred he would let them know right away. And so he did because he could have been held in contempt had he not done so.

The FBI pursued that investigation and made I believe over 100 arrests of pimps and also rescued some victims being used for sex. One of the children rescued was two years old. It didn't make a lot of headlines, but Comey called a press conference about that effort to take down the people doing the trafficking all over the Country and to rescue the victims. There were many agents standing behind him as he spoke who had worked long hours on this assignment.
