GOP baffled by timing; WH braces for independent probe

Mike Allen 2 hrs ago

In a swirl of sobering questions about the Constitution and the rule of law, many Republicans are asking simply: Why now? Why?!

Republicans around town, and even some White House officials, tell me they're baffled by President Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey in the middle of his Russia investigation — and with the explanation that it's because of his handling of Hillary's email, which Trump had praised him for in the past.

"They just barely got the tiniest bit of momentum going after the House health care bill, and now it's like the engine has fallen out of the car," said an outside adviser to the West Wing. "The Russia thing will now go on forever. And the rationale in the letter was preposterous. This was a tremendous miscalculation."

Even some White House officials believe that the likely result will be a special counsel, which Democrats are now pushing nearly in unison. AP reports that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said last night that he told Trump in a phone conversation "[Y]ou are making a big mistake."

The firing increases scrutiny of the feds' Russia probe, and will make Democrats even more aggressive with their investigation. Comey, who's 6 foot 8, literally and psychically towered over so many national dramas of the past decade, and is accused by Democrats of tipping the presidential election.

They run everything.

They are dismantling the New Deal and every public thing (except war making) since. Nothing will stop them from completing that task.

They could care less about Russia, Twitler, the people or the media.

I think it was Gloria Borger on AC's panel - she said that the WH had no idea that there would be ANY blowback from this let alone at the intensity level it naturally reached. No clue. Didn't see firing the Director of the FBI as being much of a deal.

Stupid is as stupid does. The self-exonerating termination letter was incredibly weird as well.

He seems to have been of the belief- and this is what the Trumpistas are latching onto- that, since Democrats were mad at Comey over how he handled Hillary's private e-mail server, they wouldn't mind- and might even applaud- him firing Comey. WRONG! If anything, it just makes him look MORE guilty of either having knowingly colluded with Russia to influence last year's election or at least was aware or became aware of what his campaign was doing later. There is just too much smoke for there to NOT be some fire somewhere. And it seems that Comey might have been getting pretty close to it.

He's surrounded by Yes men, Priebus who's in constant battles, and Bannon who just makes sure the monkey wrench (Trump) keeps screwing up the machinery.

1) "Why now? Why?" As if it isn't obvious to everyone that the investigation was inexorably leading back to Trump himself, and that the only way he could keep his grasp on power was to use any method available to derail the investigation? These are not the actions of an innocent person, but of one who knows circumstances put him above the law.

2) "Even some White House officials believe that the likely result will be a special counsel." Not unless Congressional Republicans move to force one, which they show no signs of doing. As it is, the likely result is handpicked loyalists in charge of the FBI and DoJ shutting down any investigations -- and destroying any evidence for good measure. Move along -- nothing to see here.

3) "...will make the Democrats even more aggressive with their investigation." As the minority party in all branches of the federal government, the Democrats have no ability to launch an investigation. Period.

This author is asking, essentially, "will Trump be able to get away with it?" -- when it should be obvious the answer is: "he already has."
