Vice President Mike Pence Met Privately With Top Russian Cleric

A top cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church and ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin met privately with Vice President Mike Pence Thursday morning and urged the U.S. to cooperate with Russia to combat terrorism in the Middle East.

Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev of Moscow, who chairs the Russian Orthodox Church’s external relations department, spoke with Pence backstage at evangelist Franklin Graham’s Washington summit on religious violence against Christians.

“It is only one united, international anti-terrorist coalition which can combat terrorism and win,” Hilarion told TIME during an interview in a suite at the Trump International Hotel in D.C., a few blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. “The two countries should put these political differences aside.”

A White House spokesman confirmed Pence's meeting with Hilarion and said the cleric's comments also reflected President Trump's views. Hilarion says that after talking with Pence, he feels “very positive” about the future of the relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

7. We're going to need more than that alone.

Pence meeting with a Russian cleric proves nothing in and of itself. We need something that would tie him directly to the Kremlin money machine that had ensnared Flynn, Page, Manafort and Trump himself.

I'm a little skeptical that we'll end up with a Trump-Pence two-fer, or a Trump-Pence-Ryan trifecta. Ultimately this is Washington and while I think the mentally unstable Trump can be offered up by the right, they'll fight harder over the traditional establishment guys.

Best I see it, we end up with an impeached Trump and a President Pence who's tainted by the association he had with Trump. That could stil benefit us greatly in 2018 and 2020.

9. I agree that's not enough

I always thought that the GOP would be happier with Pence (who is loathsome) but that Trump was the only electable Republican. I think they always planned to have Pence be president, through a Trump resignation or something else.

I'm hoping that Flynn is talking and that Pence knew all along of Flynn's Russian connections.

8. Pence Has To Be In The Know

When Pence said to, I think it was, Chris Wallace that he only just came to know that day that Flynn was a paid foreign agent, that was enough to tell me that he is in the know, and that he just lied! Elijah Cummings sent Pence a letter about this, and it was all over the headlines. So, there is definitely some funny business with Pence...if nothing else, he was at least in the know about anything Russia related!

Putin's fingers are not only present in the elections of the western democracies it is also present in the Orthodox Church. Putin has a close friend in Kirill, Patriarch of the Russian Church. Kirill no doubt does whatever Putin wants him to do.

The Russian Patriarch's influence over the churches of Bulgaria and Georgia caused their no show at The Great and Holy Council gathering last June on Crete. At the daily news conference at the end of each day the lead Russian reporter tried essentially to disrupt the proceedings by trying to insinuate the meetings were not valid because of the absence of the Russian, Bulgarian and Romanian churches. She was obviously sent there with an agenda. She spoke perfect English without a trace of an Russian accent. I was part of the Ecumenical Patriarch's official documentary video crew. I was there for seventeen days so was at every news conference and was able to observe her activities. She constantly interrupted the council representative and was just plain rude. She even made an accusation on twitter that my producer was a CIA agent. She later retracted the tweet.

Putin has a concerted effort on all fronts to discredit anything political going on in the west including using religion.

My disclaimer, I am an Atheist and in no way other than employed as a freelance videographer involved with the church. I am however a fan of the Ecumenical Patriarch and his message of peace and love.

If these psudo-Christians like Pence and Graham are involved with anyone from the Russian church it shows the Russians are there at Putin's insistence. Pence and Graham, are fools and they have a dream of a United States run by a Christo-fascist dictatorship modeled along the lines of Putin's relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church.

We need to stay aware.
