Sen. Dick Durbin, the Senate's number two Democrat, said President Trump may be obstructing justice by firing FBI Director James Comey, who was leading the investigation into Russia's meddling in the U.S. election and Moscow's ties to Trump associates.
President Trump is dangerous because he may be obstructing justice in terms of the investigation that goes to the heart of our democracy, the accountability of the president, the Illinois senator said during an interview on MSNBC Friday.
While most Senate Democrats and some Republicans have criticized the timing and rationale for Comeys firing, Durbins assertion that Trump may have been obstructing justice is notable because it would be an impeachable offense. President Richard Nixon resigned after the House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment against him, including one for obstruction of justice. President Bill Clinton was impeached by the House on two charges including obstructing justice; he was acquitted by the Senate.

(10,123 posts)I have no words other than
Yates - firing her, trying to block her testimony and tweeting attempts to intimidate her
50 US Attorneys - fired including Preet Bharara who was apparently investigating Trump
Comey - the dinner story where he's asking about his job while Trump is asking if he's under investigation, his interview yesterday admitting the Deputy AG memo had nothing to do with it but the Russia witch hunt needed to end, his press secretary yesterday saying getting rid of Comey would help bring the Russia investigation to an end
We could go back to Manafort, Page, Priebus, Sessions, etc.
There is no more "may be" about it. It is close to as clear cut as it gets.

Harvard professor and constitutional law expert Laurence Tribe on Thursday called President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey "staggering" and said Trump obstructed justice by asking for Comey's loyalty.
"That is, clearly, on it's face obstruction of justice," Tribe said on MSNBC on Thursday, referring to reports that Trump asked Comey for his "loyalty" at a private dinner.
...
"What it really means is, Can I count on you not to make me a target of this investigation Tribe said. "That's clearly an impermissible question."
...
Tribe said that Trump's own words insinuated that he was guilty of obstructing the FBI's investigation.
"So, either Trump's own account of the discussion is true, in which case he's guilty of obstruction of justice," Tribe said. "Or, much more likely, Comey's account is true in which Comey gave him no assurances and said, You can count on me to be honest, but not to be reliable or swear fealty to you.
"Either way, as with the first article of impeachment against Richard Nixon, this is a series of high crimes and misdemeanors," Tribe said.
Let's stop pussy footing around with the pussy groper.
