To Nixon resigning.
What? 2 years?
And this is way more complex with way more players.
Ugh.

(115,606 posts)The burglary was only the proverbial tip of the iceberg. The investigation ultimately revealed a web of money-laundering schemes that were created to come up with money to pay for dirty tricks that included bugging the offices of political opponents, and clandestine investigations of activist groups and politicians using the FBI, the CIA and the IRS. 69 people were indicted, and eventually 48 of them were found or pled guilty. One reason it took so long to get Nixon out of office was that he took the issue of whether he had to produce the tapes all the way to the Supreme Court. It wasn't until the court ordered him to turn over the "smoking gun" tape that impeachment seemed to be inevitable.
Trump/Russia seems to be moving a lot faster right now, but it is also extremely complex, involving foreign entities. What might cause a resolution to happen sooner than Watergate is the fact that where Nixon was clever and careful, Trump shoots from the hip and doesn't seem to understand that there are times when he should just shut up rather than basically admit to obstruction of justice.

(30,717 posts)And I was a Watergate junkie. I hardly slept during that time. I would watch the hearings on PBS until I was loopy with fatigue, stumble off to bed, and go to work the next day. I did the same thing, day after day.
I worked with a group of educated, informed people. We were librarians who catalogued and processed books and AV materials for twenty-two school libraries. Everyone, no matter what their political affiliation, was equally interested in the Watergate proceedings.
When he resigned, we obtained a tv from the school library in our building and watched Nixon 'copter away from DC. We went back to work. You could have heard a pin drop a block away.
On a side note, I was just thinking about some of the dirty tricks today. Remember Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist, and the break-in at his office?
