U2 sends President Trump a message as they kick off US tour
‘I see Trump as a different matter outside of politics. And in the party of Lincoln it’s a hostile takeover,’ he said.
‘And as I hope to be able to communicate tonight: People who voted for Trump are welcome here but he’s not. But I think you’ve got to understand why people are angry. I think that maybe a bit of humility comes into trying to understand why people vote like that.
‘For example, 52 per cent of college educated women voted for Trump. So it tells you something and I’m sure it’s doesn’t tell you that they think he really regards them.
‘And I really want people to feel the American idea. I’m always reminding myself America is not just a country it’s an idea and we’ve all got a stake in that idea succeeding.
‘There will be a lot of people who voted for Trump coming to our show and as I say, they are welcome, he is not. Not that he is clamouring to get in. I’ve never met him. I wouldn’t want to meet him because he’d have more photographers than I would and it just gets drowned out that kind of thing.’
‘There’s many things that are upsetting but there’s a paper circulated over the New Year that show a lot of cuts coming in things that people have worked really hard on over the years. They are not going to cut the funding in the fight against HIV they are just going to level it and Bill Gates will be here tonight, he will tell you ‘but that doesn’t work guys. He can’t level it off because people will die. So I don’t wanna meet that person.’
