Miss USA Kara McCullough thinks unemployed shouldnt have health careKara McCullough says coverage is a "privilege," not a right

The future of the American Health Care Act may remain unclear, but one thing is certain: Kara McCullough, who on Sunday night went from being Miss District of Columbia to Miss USA, doesnt have much sympathy for people who dont have health insurance.
According to a report by the New York Daily News,McCullough said that she believes health care is not a right but merely a privilege, during a question-and-answer session for the pageant at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on the Las Vegas Strip.
When addressing a query about her health-care views, McCullough said that, Im definitely going to say its a privilege. As a government employee, Im granted health care. And I see firsthand that for one to have health care, you need to have jobs so therefore, we need to continue to cultivate this environment so that were given the opportunities to have health care as well as jobs for all Americans worldwide.

(59,502 posts)Her comments suggest that everyone should just get a very good job and then they would have insurance. I guess she could have added that that good job would also provide an ample salary allowing everyone to afford a nice home and other needs. I think she is right on both of these things --- but the problem is that there are many who do not qualify or can't get these good jobs ... and there are the kids of people who can not get these jobs.
I would bet that she was born with many advantages that she does not even see as not given to all. Clearly - not having seen a photo - she is unusually beautiful, given her job, she is more educated and likely smarter than the average person. Rather than feeling fortunate that she was given so much, she seems oblivious to her own good fortune.

(1,303 posts)health insurance? Or people that for one reason or another can't work? They need healthcare more than a healthy person. I think she is a poor example of a representative for the USA.

An educated person can be evil as hell too.
It is a condition of the soul not logic.

(31,110 posts)provide group health insurance, and only people who are sorry, lazy, and/or not very well educated don't have insurance
through their jobs.
Republicans often think that, I've noticed, that if you don't have health insurance with your employer, it is YOUR problem. I didn't have insurance with my cheapo employer for years and I had Republicans say things to me such as, "Why don't you have it?" and
something to the effect that I just needed to find a job that did offer it. (Like, now WHY didn't I think of that?)
This stupid woman is a--well, the word I'm thinking of is one that will probably get my post yanked if I used it.

This is a very dangerous and naive person.

How much money does does she think the government spends paying for expensive emergency care for all those uninsured, or providing them and their families aid and public assistance when they become too sick to work?

(1,148 posts)The collision was not her fault, but it messed up her ankle so bad she has to have a second cartilage graft. She took so much time off for surgery, pain, and recovery that she got fired. None of this was her fault.
She is trying to get disability or work from home. Her back is so messed up that she can't sit in a chair all day. She did nothing to deserve this. I'd like Miss USA to explain how health care ought to be a "privilege" for someone who is unemployed and disabled and a victim.
