(9,766 posts)I've alerted. I've posted on these threads and have been called all manner of things as a result. I'm done. These threads are becoming more numerous because they are allowed to exist and actively encouraged by a large number of members. That's what this place has become I guess, and I don't want to be a part of it.

(111,245 posts)A very LONG history of fat shaming women, especially women who are a normal size and body type. He is one of the worst, a hideous man who is morbidly obese himself, projecting that onto any woman he sees.
He is an appropriate target. Otherwise, most of us have learned to STFU about body type.
I'm so sorry criticism of Dolt45 has so upset you.

I feel sorry for Barron.
With the last of name of Trump.
He will at some point have to deal with it.
His father is really hated and that is a fact.
He will be a man in about 10 years.
What then.
His mother needs to start to work with him on this.
If she doesn't he is in trouble.
Right now he can be hidden away in an expensive school but he will still hear things.
Hide him in a private schools now but his last name is Trump.
The world will never love his daddy.
Safe places will not work forever.

(8,698 posts)I think what Miss USA said about health care not being a right was worse then "a Republican fuckbuddy".
and I think Cohen is a creep - because he is bigly involved with Russiagate. Is that the only photo he could come up with of his daughter? Would Obama ever post a photo like that of one of his daughters - NEVER EVER. Why would anyone on DU defend Cohen?
I am bothered that your concerns are only for Republicans - Michelle can't wear a sleeveless dress without comment but we can't comment on someone being an underwear model. It's the news. Guilfoyle becoming Press Sec is NOT the scary concern to you - but her underwear photos are.
And Warpy was right about Trump's hypocrisy - an obese man fat shaming women who are barely overweight. Sorry, but this just begs for comments esp. when he is photographed eating his junk food.

(37,748 posts)It's fun to rationalize in ourselves that which we criticize in others. No doubt, I imagine you'll justify it as relevant to both policy and law as well, and that it is absolutely constructive in both the mid-terms and his eventual removal. Because fiction isn't just for badly written sci-fi anymore...
"I'm so sorry criticism of Dolt45 has so upset you..."
I imagine your sorrow is as as sincere and truthful as your rationalizations. You'll certainly allege as such.

(30,481 posts)I have seen fat and slut shaming on occasion here since I started reading. I haven't really noticed an uptick. Some days something happens and there can be more of it seen. Other days we don't see any at all. I have not replied in certain threads today dealing with a lawyers daughter because of how vile I felt the direction was. At one point in my tenure here I would address each and every one of them hoping it would be educational. Didn't always work out well as far as conversations go.
The thoughts most members hold about these issues is one of the reasons I love it here. An overwhelming majority truly care and don't take part. That said, ten or so posters can sometimes make themselves look like a majority. I venture over to freeperville every now and then. Just about every single post with multiple replies has some element of racism, sexism, bigotry, etc.

(34,062 posts)At least not of those who are serving on juries.
And it's not just fat/slut shaming. There's also a lot of using being gay as a battering ram recently. I've commented in the thread, I've alerted, and all I've gotten for my effort is 1 hide (out of perhaps 20), verbal abuse, and 2 24-hour alert time-outs becasue 0 out of 7 people thought it was perfectly fine to call Trump (or whoever the latest target is) gay as an insult , and appealing to the admins. (I've never had a single one before this latest uptick - perhaps not in quantity, but in thinking it is OK to use a traditionally despised group as an insult because "anything is fair game" against Republicans - including, apparently, sending the message to LGBT, women, fat people, etc. that being LGBT, women, fat people, etc is pretty vile (because otherwise it isn't an effective insult).

(30,481 posts)It wouldn't shock me if a considerable number of posters have opted out. There could also be more OperationMindCrime posters here.
Some of the attacks we have seen recently should easily garner a hide, yet they stand. I fully agree with you there. I also think we have far too much justification going on that is probably part of the reason for the juries. That in itself is not justifiable.
I think there is currently a greater chance of our posts in this conversation being hidden than the slut shaming or bigotry directed at republicans/conservatives.

The fat jokes, well, I don't like them, but it isn't as if he's this bright, shining beacon of morality.
Not sure where the slut-shaming was, unless you are speaking of AO's lawyer showing a lingerie picture of his daughter. The point wasn't that she shouldn't have done the photo shoot, it was that it is skeevy for her DAD to be posting sexually provocative photos of his daughter. As a survivor of sexual abuse by my own father, that sets off all sorts of alarms in my head.
Bye. You know, I'm sometimes disappointed in this place, but I relax and give it a few days and things settle down. It's all about whether you choose to find something good to take away or obsess over the bad.

(595 posts)minors should be off limits. I don't like the "shaming" but agree it is time we fight the fight that is in front of us. Trump and his older children are not off limits IMO. They are in the limelight b/c of Daddy so they get what is coming to them.
I did not see the post that the OP is responding to so I can't comment on that specific thread. But, I do believe we need to stand up and fight - we aren't winning. Stand up against the Trump adults (use that term loosely) and put them under fire.

(58,785 posts)being us. Being principled isn't a label on one's lapel, it's behavior, adherence to principle. And if America loses the one party that stands for and protects the principles our liberal, liberal-leaning, and moderate founding fathers established, they will be no longer.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)you are telling fat members of DU that you find them disgusting. Because fat doesn't work as an insult, unless it is inherently bad.
So even if you think going low tactics are appropriate against Republcans, it is absolutely not appropriate for you to use tactics that leave the floor littered with all of the LGBT/fat/women/ you just collaterally insulted.
Demtexan

(34,062 posts)the next time a jury lets a mAnn Coulter comment slide by, or the 21% of gay men who have a suicide plan (with 12% having attempted it the next time the cock holster crack is made, or - more relevant - the obese and extremely obese teens who engage in suicide ideation at 31% and 81% higher rates than their normal weight peers the next time fat shaming post is left standing because everythig goes to take down a Republican - even if we end up creating collateral damage among the population who is also being shamed sub voce.
I'm in a number of groups that are targeted for shaming - and I'm just fine, as well. But that doesn't make it OK.
The emotional health of individuals in a disparaged group does not make it OK to use people who are trans, gay, or fat as a bludgeon on people we hate. Even if some individuals in groups which are the target of society's hatred remain able to feel good about themselves and not be bothered.
Telling someone to feel good about themself doesn't make it possible for them to carry out that direction - and it is not ok to make it worse because we are not creative enough to find insults that do not require the use of people as battering rams.
Demtexan
(1,588 posts)I know it is not easy.
I have have known a lot of people who fit outside the box.
What other people think about you means nothing.
It is just words.
The only power people have over you is the power you give them.
I learned that a long time ago.
Be who you are and be happy.
in the end you are the only one that can make this happen.
Words only have power you give them.
Ms. Toad
(34,062 posts)It is a fantastic perspective to achieve. I'd even go so far as to say it is lifesaving.
But it is not appropriate to demand of individuals whose lives are hard enough, largely becasue of society's hatred of them, that their communities have an increased suicide ideation or attempts of 50% to 1000% over their non-stigmatized peers. Nor is it appropriate for a progressive community to say "tough noogies - pick yourself up, you weakling, and stop whining" when members of those groups ask you to stop because you are reinforcing the amount of hatred and stigma heaped on their heads.
Be creative enough to find insults that don't require you to use people's lives as insults.
Demtexan
(1,588 posts)At some point people have to grow up and take care of themselves.
If they want to give power to other people so be it.
If they want to care about what other people think about them so be it.
Happiness and being at peace with yourself is something each person has deal with.
Nobody else can do it.
Hope you find peace in your life.
Life is better that way.

We often rationalize running away by use of unsupported, faith-based prophecies. I'ts convenient and allows us to pretend our courage and convictions are intact and that cowardice is simply "cutting our losses..."

(36,106 posts)It's a double standard and the whole thing sucks. It's especially cringe-worthy when the underlying sentiment is basically "he/she is really nice for a ____ person" Fill in with fat, gay, black, etc. No one stops to analyze it
Unfortunately, it's easy to grab for low-hanging fruit when you're really, really angry, frustrated, and feeling powerless. Yet not realize the attitudes you've just exposed
You should stay and keep explaining it

mythology
(9,527 posts)But there are enough who don't for me to stick around. I find that sort of name calling sad for the person using it. If the worst thing I can think to say about Trump is that he's overweight, then my debate skills are in a sad state of affairs. I don't dislike Trump because he's overweight, or even that he seems to be in denial about it.
And the best way to show I believe throwing around vapid insults on those sorts of things, isn't by doing so myself. There are plenty of policy and personality reasons to say that Trump is a lousy human being without being a hypocrite.
But the way to fight that sort of culture is to fight it. Is to not give in to it. Reject their faulty arguments. Be better than the the people who engage in juvenile physical insults. Sure some will cling to them, but that's about who they are as a person.

But I'll never stoop to their level.
Here's a news flash; they are better at it; let them wallow in their filth. We won't get anywhere acting that way. But go on your merry path to hatefulness if that's what you want.
They will then have succeeded in bringing us into the mud where they dwell. So go on - sling gender insults and gay slurs, mock fat people and poor people...keep at it. When you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas. Ugh. Good luck with that.
