The Federal Aviation Administration said a Learjet 35 from Philadelphia crashed while attempting to land at Teterboro Airport.
The plane went down about 1/4 mile from the airport in a wooded area in Carlstadt, according to the FAA.
Police said the plane damaged a warehouse.
A thick plume of smoke can be seen rising from the site of the crash.
There was no immediate word on casualties.

A Learjet 35 crashed as it was approaching the airports Runway 1 around 3:30 pm and went down in a neighborhood about 400 yards away, the FAA said in a statement to the Daily News Tuesday afternoon.
FAA communications manager Katheleen Bergen said that the plane was coming from Philadelphia International Airport.
It was not immediately clear how many people had been injured in the crash.

I'd also add that initial reports said that there were four people aboard that plane, until the local police stepped in and defined the two crew as also being the two "passengers." Probably just an error in reporting, but one of these days, soon, we'll see it for real.
