Brown Bear hit crossing 210 Freeway in Southern California

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/national-international/Bear-Hit-by-Car-210-Freeway-422335423.html

She's recovering at the Humane Society in Pomona now. Luckily, it doesn't seem as if she was nursing, so there's no cubs to worry about.

Usually, we start seeing young mountain lions coming down into the suburbs and bedroom towns this time of year looking for food.

2. They can be pretty fast. One crossed across the road in front of me last fall when I was driving.

It was a back road and I wasn't going all that fast so no danger to either of us, but he didn't stick around to watch cars.

4. Well, there's this freeway divider, and she had already crossed the eastbound lanes.

She was apparently hit after she climbed over the divider, but still made across three lanes into to the bushes on the other side of the freeway and was still moving pretty fast from the pictures, so it was probably more of a bump than a head on. This apparently happened around 9 in the morning, rush hour was petering out, so traffic was light enough that most people could probably slow down or swerve to avoid her.

Whoever clipped her was in the fast lane - probably doing 70+ and couldn't react quite quickly enough when she popped up into his/her view over the divider into the lane.

But are not grizzlies, if that makes sense. As in the black bear genus contains members, occasionally, with a brown coloration.

7. Last week 4 lanes of major city traffic stopped so that 2 Canadian Geese could cross.

Urban driving is different here I guess.

10. I remember the only time I've seen a bear in the wild.

I was driving through the Ocala National Forest in central Florida at night.

Two lane road. My headlights were on. There was a car coming from the opposite direction with its headlights on.

Just seconds before I passed ways with the other car, I see a big huge hulking bear dart right out in front of the road, across my lane and just making it to the other side before the other car could hit it.

Buffets trump picnic baskets every time. A 225-250 adult female bear with a little (healthy) fat on her translates to a black bear.
