"McCarthys use of the multiple lie an accusation so long and containing so many untruths that no one could ever pin down all the lies at one time), and his repeated emphasis on so called facts and documents in a society which easily accepts the superficial appearance of truth for the truth itself, made McCarthy invulnerable to Trumans retaliation. From America, Russia and the Cold War 1945-2006 10th ed. p. 119 by Walter Lafeber.Just think, giveem hell Harry couldnt effectively attack McCarthy. This is just like Trump attacking all kinds of people from different walks of life. He attacked Rosie ODonnell, the union rep from Carrier, Jeb Bush, and especially Hillary.
McCarthys most famous BS:
McCarthy announced that he held in his hand proof that the Department of State was riddled with Communists. The paper he waved could prove nothing even faintly related to his charges, but no matter.
From Wikipedia, in McCarthys Wheeling Speech, it is generally agreed that he produced a piece of paper that he claimed contained a list of known Communists working for the State Department. McCarthy is usually quoted to have said: "The State Department is infested with communists. I have here in my hand a list of 205a list of names that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the State Department.
McCarthy himself was taken aback by the massive media response to the Wheeling speech, and he was accused of continually revising both his charges and figures.

WTF!?
Daily, Trump changes his facts too. The main difference between McCarthy and Trump is that McCarthy was against Russia while Trump is for Russia to such an extent that he may be a Russian agent. Both men were associates of Roy Cohn who actually tried to have Mark Twain's works removed form the library as being subversive. (also from Lafeber's book) Additionally, composer Aaron Copland was called before McCarthy's witch hunt. Just think, the man behind Fanfare for the Common Man and Lincoln Portrait was once brought before the House un-American activities committee.
Like Trump, McCarthy benefitted from the more primitive, baser instincts of the electorate. Hopefully, this current tragedy will be remembered as a sad anomaly in the American story.

(1,242 posts)"For Mr. Cohn, who died of AIDS in 1986, weeks after being disbarred for flagrant ethical violations, Mr. Trump was something of a final project. If Fred Trump got his sons career started, bringing him into the family business of middle-class rentals in Brooklyn and Queens, Mr. Cohn ushered him across the river and into Manhattan, introducing him to the social and political elite while ferociously defending him against a growing list of enemies.
Decades later, Mr. Cohns influence on Mr. Trump is unmistakable. Mr. Trumps wrecking ball of a presidential bid the gleeful smearing of his opponents, the embracing of bluster as brand has been a Roy Cohn number on a grand scale. Mr. Trumps response to the Orlando massacre, with his ominous warnings of a terrorist attack that could wipe out the country and his conspiratorial suggestions of a Muslim fifth column in the United States, seemed to have been ripped straight out of the Cohn playbook."
"I hear Roy in the things he says quite clearly, said Peter Fraser, who as Mr. Cohns lover for the last two years of his life spent a great deal of time with Mr. Trump. That bravado, and if you say it aggressively and loudly enough, its the truth thats the way Roy used to operate to a degree, and Donald was certainly his apprentice.
"For 13 years, the lawyer who had infamously whispered in McCarthys ear whispered in Mr. Trumps. In the process, Mr. Cohn helped deliver some of Mr. Trumps signature construction deals, sued the National Football League for conspiring against his client and countersued the federal government for $100 million for damaging the Trump name. One of Mr. Trumps executives recalled that he kept an 8-by-10-inch photograph of Mr. Cohn in his office desk, pulling it out to intimidate recalcitrant contractors.
The two men spoke as often as five times a day, toasted each other at birthday parties and spent evenings together at Studio 54."
